When we filmed this in August 2024, the Tesla Cybertruck had been on US roads for a while and was finally on show in the UAE ahead of its local launch. Online it divides opinion, but in person it is a very different proposition. Here is what stood out when we got up close with it in Dubai.
A design that looks like nothing else on the road
The Cybertruck is built around a stainless steel body with a polished, angular finish, and Tesla fitted it with what it says is the largest windscreen wiper on any production car. Fingerprints on the steel, a common complaint online, were less of an issue in person than we expected.
The sheer size is what you notice most. Standing next to it at 165 cm, the roof sits well above head height, and its length and stance make it clear this is a proper pickup truck. The wheels and tyres are huge and purpose-made for the truck.
Built for camping and carrying
The rear load bed is where the Cybertruck gets clever:
- A drop-down tailgate opening onto a hard-wearing, protected surface
- A powered tonneau cover that slides over the bed at the press of a button to keep your gear concealed
- Hidden storage under the bed that can also hold water for camping trips
- Power outlets in the bed so you can plug in equipment while you are out
Inside the Tesla Cybertruck
Climbing in feels like sitting inside a Transformer. There is no Tesla branding on the outside, and the interior is all about the Cybertruck itself. You get ambient lighting, a small drive-by-wire steering wheel and a large central screen, similar to the Model 3 and Model Y.
The rear wheels also steer, which owners we spoke to at the display said makes it easier to manoeuvre than you would expect for its size. In the back there is generous leg room and head room, a big glass roof and a rear screen for passengers.
Our take
Whether you love the look or not, the Cybertruck is one of the most unusual vehicles to reach the UAE, and seeing it in person changes how you think about it. Watch our full first look above, and find more car reviews and launches in our Automotive section.
