The GWM Tank 700 is not what most people picture when they hear the name GWM. It is big, bold and, on Dubai roads, impossible to ignore. We took it out on UAE roads and into the sand to see whether this full-size luxury 4×4 is more than just presence, and whether it can genuinely stand up to the names that usually own this segment.
Design and road presence
From the outside, the Tank 700 has the kind of stance that turns heads at every signal. It is a large, upright, square-shouldered SUV, and on the road it reads as properly menacing. If you want a car that people notice, this one delivers before you have even started the engine.
Inside the GWM Tank 700
Step in and the first thing that hits you is space. The cabin is generous, and the finish is where the Tank 700 starts to justify the word luxury:
- Nappa leather across the cabin
- Ambient lighting
- Heated and ventilated seats
- Massage seats
- A 360 degree camera view that makes a big car far easier to place
The suspension is soft and the cabin is very well insulated, so you stay isolated from the noise outside. This is a car you could comfortably drive every day.
Performance on UAE roads
For a full-size luxury SUV, the Tank 700 moves. It is powered by a 3.0 litre twin-turbo V6, and when you put your foot down it genuinely flies. What stood out most for us is how comfortable it stays while doing it. You could drive it across the UAE in a day and still step out feeling fresh.
Off-road ability
Underneath all that luxury sits serious off-road hardware. The Tank 700 comes with three locking differentials, a low-range 4×4 mode and a range of off-road tech designed to keep you moving when the ground gets difficult. In our video, that is exactly what came in handy when a friend got stranded in the sand.
Add a large boot with room for camping gear, and it makes a strong case as a car that can do the school run on Monday and the desert on Friday.
Our verdict
Some SUVs choose luxury and some choose capability. The GWM Tank 700 manages to offer both. If you are cross-shopping a Land Cruiser or a Patrol, it is worth a test drive before you decide.
