Serious offences: court penalties

The UAE’s traffic law, Federal Decree Law No. 14 of 2024, took effect on 29 March 2025. It sets court penalties for the most serious offences.

Driving under the influence of drugsJail and a fine of AED 30,000 to AED 200,000. Licence suspended for 6 months, then 1 year for a repeat, then cancelled.
Driving without a licenceUp to 3 months in jail and/or a fine of AED 5,000 to AED 50,000. Repeat offences: at least 3 months in jail and up to AED 100,000.
Hit and runUp to 2 years in jail and a fine of AED 50,000 to AED 100,000.
Jaywalking that causes an accidentA fine of AED 5,000 to AED 10,000. On roads with a limit of 80 km/h or more: at least 3 months in jail and/or a fine of at least AED 10,000.

Dubai impound release fees

In Dubai, getting an impounded car back costs a release fee on top of the fine. These fees have applied since 14 June 2023 under Dubai Decree No. 30 of 2023.

A car can also be impounded until fines over AED 6,000 are paid. If the same car is impounded again within a year, the fee and the impound period double, up to AED 200,000 and 90 days. Storage after the release date costs AED 50 a day.
