Exploring Student Internships in the UAE? Key Rules and Guidelines

Internships are a great way for students in the UAE to gain hands-on experience and prepare for the workforce. They offer a chance to learn new skills, build professional networks, and enhance resumes. However, there are specific rules and guidelines that both students and employers need to follow.

Age Requirements and Permissions

Who Can Intern?
In the UAE, students aged 15 and above can work as interns. However, they must have a written contract outlining the terms of their internship, such as the type of work, hours, and any compensation. For students between 15 and 18 years old, a juvenile work permit is required, and they must not be employed in certain hazardous jobs.

Necessary Documents
To start an internship, students need to provide:

  • A consent form from their parent or guardian.
  • Emirates Identity Card (EID).
  • Proof of student status.
  • A valid UAE Residence Visa (for expatriate students).
  • A fitness certificate or a consent letter from their parent (for training roles).
  • A no-objection certificate from their school.

Working Conditions and Safety

Daily Work Limits
Interns are allowed to work a maximum of six hours per day, with at least one hour of break time. They should not work overtime, at night, or on public holidays. Employers must ensure that interns work in safe conditions and provide proper training on health and safety measures.

Prohibited Jobs
There are certain jobs that students under 18 are not allowed to do. These include working in mines, handling dangerous materials, and jobs in places like cement factories or bakeries.

Compensation and Benefits

Are Internships Paid?
Internships don’t have to be paid, but companies are encouraged to cover any expenses interns incur. At the end of the internship, companies should provide an experience certificate detailing the intern’s work and performance.

Special Programs for Emirati Students
The UAE Ministry of Education offers internships specifically for Emirati students who have excelled in their studies. This program connects students with top companies in various industries, providing valuable work experience.

Internships in the UAE are a fantastic way for students to gain practical experience and prepare for their future careers. By understanding the rules and requirements, both students and employers can ensure a smooth and beneficial internship experience.
