Dubai Ride 2026: Thousands Cycle Sheikh Zayed Road as Dubai Fitness Challenge Turns 10

Before sunrise on Sunday, 1 November 2026, Dubai’s busiest highway went quiet. No horns, no Salik beeps, no lane changes at 140. Just the hum of thousands of tyres rolling down 14 lanes of Sheikh Zayed Road as Dubai Ride 2026, presented by DP World, kicked off the 10th edition of the Dubai Fitness Challenge.

It is one of those mornings that only happens in this city. Serious road bikes rolled alongside kids on training wheels. Families turned up in matching outfits. E-bikes buzzed past riders grinding up the Dubai Canal bridge. And the skyline that usually frames gridlock framed something far better: a city out of its cars and on two wheels.

Arrival opened at 4am, riders rolled out at 6.15am, the gates closed at 7.30am and Sheikh Zayed Road was handed back to traffic at 8.15am. In those few hours, thousands of cyclists took over the road, one year after Dubai Ride set its all-time record of 40,327 riders.

Here is how the morning looked from the official Dubai Fitness Challenge account:

Two routes, one skyline

Riders picked between two courses, and both delivered the kind of views you normally only get from a car window at 20km/h in traffic.

The 12km Sheikh Zayed Road route

This was the main event for regular riders. It ran from Dubai World Trade Centre past the Museum of the Future and Coca-Cola Arena, out towards Safa Park and back. The one real test was the climb over the Dubai Canal bridge, which split the weekend warriors from the regular Al Qudra crowd. Riders entered from five start gates: Museum of the Future, Al Satwa, Coca-Cola Arena, Business Bay and Lower Financial Street, and finished at the same gate they started from.

The 4km Downtown family route

Flat and relaxed, this one was made for kids, first-timers and anyone who wanted photos more than a workout. It followed Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard past Dubai Mall, Dubai Opera and the base of Burj Khalifa. There was also a dedicated start area for People of Determination.

The rules were simple. Bring your own bike, wear a helmet and wear your bib. E-bikes were welcome; scooters were not.

Dress Your Ride: the new addition for 2026

This year brought something Dubai Ride had never done before. The first-ever Dress Your Ride competition put Dh10,000 on the line for the best-dressed riders, whether that meant a decorated bike, a themed outfit or a whole family in coordinated costumes. Official event photographers captured entries along the route, and organisers have said the prize may be shared among more than one winner. Winners are due to be announced later this week.

A ride that keeps getting bigger

Dubai Ride has grown every year. It drew 37,130 cyclists in 2024 and a record 40,327 in 2025, and organisers went into 2026 expecting an even bigger turnout. The official 2026 count has not been released yet.

There was also a huge logistics story behind the start line. Presenting partner DP World says 2,990 TEUs of bicycles were shipped from China to Jebel Ali ahead of the event, then moved from port to rider in time for Sunday morning.

The city made it easy to show up. The RTA closed three major roads from 3am to 9.30am and pointed drivers to Upper Financial Centre Street, Zabeel Palace Street, Al Wasl Road and Al Khail Road. Dubai Metro opened at 3am and ran until midnight, and riders who drove in parked at Dubai World Trade Centre, Dubai Mall or Dubai Mall Zabeel parking. We covered the full plan in our Dubai Ride 2026 parking and road guide.

Ten years of the Dubai Fitness Challenge

Dubai Ride is the opening act of something bigger. The Dubai Fitness Challenge was launched in 2017 by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai, with one simple ask: 30 minutes of activity a day for 30 days. This year marks its 10th season, running from 31 October to 29 November 2026.

If Sunday got you hooked, the calendar is full:

  • Dubai Stand-Up Paddle, Hatta, 7 and 8 November
  • Dubai Run, Sheikh Zayed Road, 22 November, with 5km and 10km courses from 6.30am. Last year drew a record 307,000 runners.
  • Dubai Yoga, Zabeel Park, 29 November, the season finale

For the petrolheads among us, there is something oddly satisfying about seeing Sheikh Zayed Road this empty. It is the same tarmac we sit on every day, just with the engines switched off. Dubai Ride is a reminder that this city was built to move, and every so often it is worth moving through it a little slower. Keep an eye on dubairide.com for the official numbers and the Dress Your Ride winners.
