Dubai has added 103 kilometres of internal roads across key residential and industrial areas, as part of ongoing plans to keep pace with population growth and improve daily travel. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) confirmed the works cover eight districts, two of which have already been completed, with six others moving steadily towards delivery.
The new developments are expected to benefit more than 400,000 residents by enhancing access, reducing congestion, and improving traffic flow. Beyond easing pressure on main highways, the projects also aim to create safer, more pedestrian-friendly communities.
Key Completed Projects: Al Khawaneej 2 and Jebel Ali Industrial Area
In Al Khawaneej 2, also known as the Tolerance District, six kilometres of new roads have been completed. The works include upgraded intersections, 765 parking spaces, and 178 lighting poles, alongside a dedicated cycling track to encourage greener modes of transport.
Meanwhile, Jebel Ali Industrial Area 1 has seen the delivery of 27 kilometres of new roads. The project involved converting a four-way junction into a signalised intersection, creating seven new roundabouts, and adding 42 kilometres of lighting. These changes will significantly improve the movement of heavy vehicles while reducing bottlenecks.
Ongoing Projects: Residential Areas on Track
Work is in progress across Nad Al Sheba, Al Awir 1, Al Warqa’a, and Wadi Al Amardi. Together, these projects will reshape the local road network and bring shorter, more efficient travel times to some of Dubai’s busiest residential zones.
- Al Warqa’a: A new access directly from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road will reduce trip distances from 5.7km to just 1.5km and cut travel time from 20 minutes to 3.5 minutes. Road capacity in the area is expected to increase by about 30%.
- Al Awir 1: The construction of a dual-carriageway connector stretching 7.5km, along with an additional four-kilometre lane on Emirates Road, is set to double capacity to 3,000 vehicles per hour. Completion is targeted for the second quarter of 2026.
Nad Al Sheba Road Network
Nad Al Sheba is receiving one of the largest internal road upgrades, with 32 kilometres of new roads under construction. The project also adds 15 kilometres of walkways and cycle tracks, many located near schools, mosques, and community parks.
Phase one, covering Nad Al Sheba 1, is due for completion by the end of 2025. The remaining phases, Nad Al Sheba 3 and 4, are scheduled to wrap up by the first quarter of 2027. Once completed, the improvements will strengthen connections across the district while promoting safer travel for families and school traffic.
Wadi Al Amardi Upgrades
Construction teams are building a 15-kilometer internal road network in Wadi Al Amardi. This project includes the installation of 405 light poles to ensure safety and visibility. The project also includes parking facilities for 1,000 vehicles, reducing pressure on main roads.
Residents will see journey distances cut by nearly 80% once the new network is fully operational. The project, which they expect to complete in the third quarter of 2026, will also increase road capacity and improve accessibility for nearby residential communities.
Dubai’s internal road projects are part of a broader plan to ensure smoother mobility and keep the city aligned with its rapid urban expansion. The developments aim to strike a balance between residential comfort and economic growth by easing congestion in industrial areas and ensuring neighbourhoods remain connected to major highways.
For residents, the changes mean shorter commutes, safer streets, and easier access to community facilities. For businesses, particularly those in Jebel Ali and Al Awir, the upgrades will speed up logistics and improve efficiency.
With over 103 kilometres already completed and more under construction, Dubai’s internal road projects are transforming how communities move within the city. As phases continue to roll out between now and 2027, residents across multiple districts can look forward to shorter, safer, and more reliable journeys.
