His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has made two key appointments.
According to decree No. 21 of 2023, HH Sheikh Mohammed appointed Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed as First Deputy Ruler of Dubai. And, Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed has been appointed as Second Deputy Ruler of Dubai.
The new offices come in place after the UAE announced a string of leadership changes in March this year. Since 2008, Sheikh Maktoum has served as the deputy ruler of Dubai, sharing the position with the late Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who until his death in March 2021 also served as the UAE’s minister of finance.

Sheikh Maktoum serves as both the First Deputy Chairman of the Emirate’s Executive Council and the UAE’s Minister of Finance. Since October 12, 2021, he has also served as the chairman of the Federal Tax Authority’s board of directors and the chairman of the general budget committee.
In addition to his roles at the federal level in the UAE, Sheikh Maktoum also holds a number of significant positions and responsibilities in Dubai, primarily in government and the economy.
The Dubai Media Council’s chairmanship is currently held by Sheikh Ahmed. He is the President of the UAE National Olympic Committee and a fervent sports enthusiast. He was chosen to serve as the International Federation for Falconry Sports and Racing’s chairman last year.

Upon his appointment’s announcement, Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed said: “I thank the precious trust placed in me by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. I will work according to the vision and approach of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid and under the leadership of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed,” he tweeted.
A number of officials also took to Twitter to congratulate Sheikh Mohammed’s sons.
The Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Center (MBRSC) also shared its best wishes.
“Congratulations to H.H. Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum for his appointment as First Deputy Ruler of Dubai and to H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum as Second Deputy Ruler of Dubai. We wish Your Highness success in the development journey,” the centre tweeted.
