Sheikh Zayed Road Upgrade Cuts Travel Time from 5 Minutes to 2

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has completed key improvements on Sheikh Zayed Road, reducing travel time from five minutes to just two minutes. The enhancements, which include lane expansions and optimized merging points, aim to ease congestion and improve traffic flow on one of the city’s busiest routes.

Increased Road Capacity and Faster Travel

The RTA has expanded the service road near the Financial Centre Metro Station in the Abu Dhabi-bound direction, increasing the number of lanes from three to four. This upgrade has boosted the road’s capacity by 25%, allowing it to handle 3,200 vehicles per hour — up from 2,400 vehicles.

The expansion cut queues, improved traffic, and reduced commutes to two minutes. The increased capacity ensures smoother and more efficient travel for motorists, especially during peak hours.

Improved Merging Distance for Smoother Traffic Flow

In addition to expanding the lanes, the RTA has also extended the merging distance between Al Khail Road and Financial Centre Street in the Dubai-bound direction. This adjustment has reduced congestion and enhanced service levels, cutting the journey time from four minutes to three minutes — a 25% reduction.

The extended merging distance improves traffic flow and reduces bottlenecks on Sheikh Zayed Road.

Key Economic and Commercial Impact

Sheikh Zayed Road is a major economic corridor, connecting several business and residential hubs. The road links DIFC, Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall, and key hubs.

The enhancements are expected to benefit businesses and daily commuters by improving traffic flow and reducing travel time. Faster travel times mean more efficient business operations and better connectivity between key economic zones.

Supporting Dubai’s Long-Term Growth

The recent upgrades are part of RTA’s broader plan to enhance road infrastructure and improve traffic management across Dubai. In January 2025, RTA completed three major traffic improvements on Sheikh Zayed Road, reinforcing the authority’s commitment to improving road safety and efficiency.

Ahmed Al Khzaimy affirmed RTA’s commitment to improving traffic flow and safe travel in Dubai.

Future Traffic Management Plans

RTA aims to enhance Dubai’s roads with smart solutions, easing congestion and boosting capacity.

Enhancing the Daily Commute

The improvements on Sheikh Zayed Road are set to enhance the daily commute for thousands of motorists. RTA reduces travel time and congestion for smoother drives in Dubai.
