VIDEO: HH Sheikh Mohammed launches ‘One Billion Meals’ Campaign

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, has launched the “1 Billion Meals Endowment” campaign. The initiative will establish a food endowment fund as a means to achieve sustainable food aid.

Coinciding with the holy month of Ramadan, the campaign aims to mobilise local, regional and international efforts for the purpose of implementing effective sustainable programmes to fight and eradicate hunger within a sustainable institutional framework.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid said: “As it has become a yearly Ramadan tradition, this year we launch the “1 Billion Meals Endowment” campaign with the aim of sustainably providing hundreds of millions of meals to people in need”.

HH Mohammed further added that 828 million people suffer from hunger around the world, this means one in 10 people. As humans and as Muslims, it is our duty to be there for those in need, especially during the month of Ramadan. Even a small but sustainable contribution makes a bigger difference than a one-time large contribution.

H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid noted that the “1 Billion Meals Endowment” campaign is a message from the UAE and its people to humanity all over the world. Our moral code compels us to take a leading position in the global efforts to eradicate hunger and alleviate suffering”.

Speaking in the video he tweeted in Arabic, Sheikh Mohammed said: “Brothers and sisters, as per our annual tradition at the start of the holy month, we are pleased to announce the launch of the ‘One Billion Meals’ endowment project in Ramadan.”

He added: “Our goal is to provide hundreds of millions of meals in a sustainable way for decades to come through this endowment project, ensuring ongoing charity for the people of the UAE and uninterrupted goodness, God willing.”

The campaign last year helped communities suffering from crises, displaced people, and families in 13 different countries, including Jordan, India, Pakistan, Lebanon, Kyrgyzstan, Angola, and Uganda.

The One Billion Meals campaign, one of the UAE’s contributions to international efforts, aims to provide sustainable food assistance to underserved populations through an integrated food supply ecosystem.

The One Billion Meals campaign supports efforts to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 2 which calls for the eradication of hunger by 2030 by responding to the urgent need to consistently provide humanitarian aid to underserved communities around the globe.
