UAE announces major change in work permits; here’s the new rule

In case you didn’t know, work permits are a requirement for anyone working in the UAE. It is illegal for a person to work in the UAE without a valid work permit issued according to the procedures set out by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE). Earlier, the validity of the work permit was for two years. However, this tenure has now been extended to three years, according to the Federal National Council (FNC).

The FNC Committee on Financial, Economic, and Industrial Affairs released a report in which the recommendation was made to extend work permits’ validity to three years. Other recommendations, like waiving work permit fees for job changes, were also included in the report. The FNC also approved a requirement stating that after the probationary period, employees must remain with an employer for at least a year. However, this requirement can be waived with the employer’s approval.

At the recent FNC meeting, Minister of Human Resources and Emiratisation, Abdulrahman Al Awar, emphasised three key policies aimed at safeguarding employers from potential risks:

Worker protection insurance system:

Employers are required by law to offer insurance protection to guarantee the safety of employees in the event of business failure or failure to make required payments. Currently, this program covers more than 96 percent of registered workers.

Wage protection system

This system ensures employee salaries are paid in a timely and secure manner.

Unemployment Insurance

The unemployment insurance program, which has over 2 million people, including 40,000 Emiratis, enrolled already, acts as a safety net for qualified workers who face job loss. Eligible employees in the UAE must enroll in the program before June 30 in order to avoid penalties. In the event of unemployment, it offers an affordable and dependable form of protection.
