The 95th Oscar-winning documentary, ‘The Elephant Whisperers’, directed by Kartiki Gonsalves and produced by Guneet Monga, has become a household name, portraying the heart-warming bond between the indigenous couple, Bomman and Bellie, and their adopted baby elephant, Raghu, in the Mudumalai National Park.

The photo went viral, with fans congratulating the couple for their well-deserved win and their tireless efforts in taking care of the abandoned baby elephants at the Theppakkadu Elephant Camp in the Nilgiris District.
In a stunning documentary, the essence of respecting indigenous communities and co-existing with other living beings is brought to light. Kartiki Gonsalves, in her captivating winning speech, highlights the divine connection that exists between humans and the wondrous natural world that surrounds us. She said, “I stand here today to speak on the sacred bond between us and our natural world. For the respect of indigenous communities. For entity towards other living beings, we share our space with. And finally for coexistence. Thank you to the academy for recognizing our film highlighting indigenous people and animals. To Netflix for believing in the power of this film. To Guneet, my Producer and my entire team and finally, to my mother, father and sister who are up there somewhere, you’re the centre of my universe. To my motherland India.”
Following the win, Tamil Nadu’s chief minister, M K Stalin, felicitated Bomman and Belli and awarded them with cheques of ?1 lakh each, a shield, and shawls to honour them. The director was also presented with a memento, shawl, and a certificate of commendation, along with a government incentive of ?1 crore.
