A major Sharjah road project worth Dh750 million is now under construction, with authorities confirming that the first phase is expected to open in November 2026. The development will introduce a new network of tunnels, bridges and free-flow intersections aimed at reducing congestion and improving connectivity between the two emirates.
The project was announced under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah. It is being delivered by Mubadara, the Authority for Initiatives Implementation, together with the Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA). According to information released by the Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority and reported by Sharjah24 on June 17, the project has been designed to strengthen six major crossings into Dubai while improving connections between older neighbourhoods and Sharjah’s newer urban communities along Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.
The wider goal is not only to reduce congestion but also to support future population growth and economic activity across the emirate.
The project is being coordinated with several government entities, including Sharjah Police, Sharjah City Municipality, the Sharjah Department of Town Planning and Survey, SEWA, e& and du.
The Al Taawun Tunnel will be the biggest game-changer
At the centre of the development is the new Al Taawun Tunnel.
The tunnel will stretch approximately 500 metres beneath Al Taawun Roundabout and feature three lanes in each direction. Once operational, it will directly connect Al Taawun Street with Al Nahda Bridge and Dubai.
According to SRTA, the tunnel and its supporting infrastructure are expected to handle around 4,200 vehicles per hour in each direction during peak traffic periods.
The tunnel will also provide easier access to Expo Centre Sharjah and support future transport connections linked to Noor Road, an upcoming extension of Al Orooba Street.
Construction is already progressing. Earlier this month, SRTA announced temporary road diversions and partial closures around Al Taawun to facilitate the project works. Drivers travelling between Sharjah and Dubai have already started experiencing route changes as construction advances.
What other improvements are being built alongside the tunnel?
The project is much larger than a single tunnel.
In total, five major road developments are being constructed simultaneously using precast concrete technology to accelerate delivery.
One of the key upgrades is taking place at the Al Khulafa Al Rashideen intersection. The project includes new box culverts beneath the existing bridge, additional traffic lanes, and a new slip bridge connecting directly to Gamal Abdel Nasser Street.
A free-flow entrance from Al Ittihad Road to Al Khan Street will also be introduced.
SRTA estimates that these upgrades alone could increase traffic capacity by approximately 2,600 vehicles per hour in both directions.
Additional works are taking place along Al Khan Street, Industrial Street 3, and the Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road interchange. Together, these improvements are intended to create smoother traffic movement while reducing pressure on existing bottlenecks.
