Ram Gopal Varma, the man behind Bollywood classics like Satya, Rangeela, Company, and Sarkar, is no stranger to controversy. Known for pushing boundaries in his films, the director is now making headlines for all the wrong reasons! A cheque bounce case that has landed him in hot water. And this time, it’s more than just a fleeting controversy; it’s a three-month jail sentence!
Ram Gopal Varma To Serve Sentence In Jail
RGV is in legal trouble yet again. The Andheri Magistrate Court in Mumbai has sentenced the filmmaker to three months of simple imprisonment for a cheque bounce case.
The case, which has been dragging on for seven long years, finally saw the court issuing a non-bailable warrant against the director. According to reports, Varma was found guilty under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act – a law that deals with dishonoured cheques. In addition to jail time, he’s been ordered to cough up ?3.75 lakh as compensation to the complainant. Failure to pay? That’s another three months behind bars.
It all started back in 2018 when a company named Shree, represented by Maheshchandra Mishra, accused RGV’s company of bouncing a cheque. Despite securing bail in June 2022 with a ?5000 deposit, the saga continued. The court, however, made it clear – no free passes for Varma since he wasn’t in custody during the trial.
Adding fuel to the fire, RGV reportedly skipped the recent hearing, and a final judgment is still in the pipeline.
RGV Breaks His Silence (Kind Of)
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Varma addressed the controversy, stating, “With regard to the news about me and Andheri court, I want to clarify that it is to do with a 7 year old case of ?2 lakh 38 thousand amount, relating to my ex-employee .. My advocates are attending to it. and since the matter is in court I cannot say anything further.”
What’s Next for RGV?
Legal woes aside, RGV isn’t slowing down on the work front. His last directorial venture, Vyuham (2024), delved into the untimely demise of former Andhra Pradesh CM YS Rajasekhara Reddy. Adding another feather to his cap, he’s making a cameo in the much-anticipated Kalki 2898 AD by Nag Ashwin.
What’s next? The filmmaker has announced a new project titled Syndicate. Knowing RGV, it’s bound to be as bold and controversial as its creator.
