Dubai International Airport (DXB) has just opened the first Assisted Travel Lounge in Terminal 2, designed to make travel easier for People of Determination (POD). This new facility aims to provide a comfortable and supportive environment for travelers with disabilities, including those with autism and hidden disabilities. This initiative is part of Dubai’s broader effort to create a more inclusive and accessible airport experience.
The Challenges of Accessible Travel
Traveling can be stressful for anyone, but for People of Determination, it often comes with extra challenges. Busy airports, sensory overload, and a lack of suitable facilities can make the journey difficult. Traditional airport lounges usually don’t have the necessary accommodations, leaving these travelers feeling isolated and overwhelmed.
The Need for Inclusive Solutions
The lack of accessible facilities in airports is more than just an inconvenience; it’s a significant barrier to travel for many individuals. This gap in services can lead to increased anxiety and discomfort, and may even deter people from traveling. The need for inclusive solutions is more pressing than ever as the world becomes more aware of the importance of accessibility and inclusivity.
The Assisted Travel Lounge
Dubai Airports, in collaboration with dnata, has taken a big step towards addressing these challenges with the launch of the Assisted Travel Lounge. This state-of-the-art facility is designed to provide a safe, comfortable, and supportive environment for People of Determination.
Key Features of the Assisted Travel Lounge
- Designated Wheelchair Areas: Spacious and easily accessible areas for wheelchair users.
- Tactile Surfaces: These surfaces help visually impaired travelers navigate the lounge with ease.
- Dedicated Seating for the Hearing-Impaired: Special seating arrangements that facilitate face-to-face communication with staff.
- Decompression Zone: A quiet area designed for individuals with autism to take a break from the overwhelming noise and activity of the airport.
- Secure Area for Unaccompanied Minors: A monitored space ensuring the safety and comfort of young travelers.
A New Standard for Accessible Travel
The Assisted Travel Lounge sets a new benchmark for accessible travel. It reflects Dubai’s vision of being an inclusive city for all and demonstrates a commitment to making air travel more accommodating for passengers with diverse needs. Majed Al Joker, Chief Operating Officer at Dubai Airports, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “This lounge reflects our dedication to ensuring that DXB is a welcoming space for People of Determination.”

Enhancing the Travel Experience
The lounge’s thoughtful design, created by Dubai Airport’s design team, integrates modern aesthetics with functionality. We carefully selected the materials, finishes, and lighting to create a serene atmosphere, offering travelers a peaceful retreat within the bustling airport environment. Claudia Vaca, Senior Manager of Experience Design Development for DXB, highlighted the importance of the decompression zone. She explained that we built it with autism specifications to conceal outside noise and provide a calming space for autistic passengers.
A Seamless Journey for All
The Assisted Travel Lounge is more than just a facility; it is a testament to Dubai Airports’ commitment to inclusivity. Jaffar Dawood, Senior Vice President of Airport Operations – UAE and MEA at dnata, stated, “We are committed to making air travel more inclusive and accommodating for passengers with diverse needs. This unique lounge marks an important milestone in providing extra comfort and care to people of determination.”
Experience the Difference
The Assisted Travel Lounge is set to open to POD and passengers on the autism spectrum from September 30. Travelers who wish to use these facilities can obtain their lanyards in the landside area, right before the check-in counters. Information desk staff or airport staff will guide passengers to the lanyard collection areas.
A Step Towards Inclusive Travel
Dubai International Airport’s new Assisted Travel Lounge is a significant step towards making air travel more inclusive and accessible. By addressing the unique needs of People of Determination, DXB is setting a new standard for airports worldwide. This initiative not only enhances the travel experience for POD but also reinforces Dubai’s reputation as a forward-thinking, inclusive city.
