Cultivating Advancement and Cooperation: Commemorating Emirati Women’s Day for a Promising Future

A Journey of Progress and Collaboration

Recognizing Emirati Women’s Achievements and Contributions

In a remarkable display of national pride and recognition, the United Arab Emirates is gearing up to celebrate Emirati Women’s Day on August 28, 2023. This annual occasion honors the exceptional achievements of Emirati women and their pivotal contributions to the nation’s remarkable journey of renaissance and sustainable development.

Collaboration for Tomorrow: H.H. Sheikha Fatima’s Vision Under the insightful guidance of H.H. Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, affectionately known as the Mother of the Nation, who serves as the Chairwoman of the General Women’s Union (GWU), President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, and Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation (FDF), this year’s Emirati Women’s Day theme is set as “We Collaborate for Tomorrow.”

This resonates harmoniously with the UAE’s overarching theme for 2023, “Today for Tomorrow,” as envisioned by President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The focus is on spotlighting the UAE’s local endeavors and global contributions in tackling sustainability challenges, particularly in the domains of energy and climate change, through groundbreaking and innovative solutions.

A Remarkable Record: UAE’s Global Gender Equality Rankings The UAE’s steadfast commitment to gender equality and empowerment is evident through its remarkable rankings in key global indices. The nation secured the top position in the Arab world and ranked 11th globally in the 2022 Gender Inequality Index by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), retaining its lead in the Middle East and North Africa region for the third consecutive year. The World Bank’s “Women, Business and the Law Report 2023” also highlighted the UAE as a frontrunner in the region for the third year running. Additionally, the World Economic Forum (WEF) recognized the UAE’s exceptional strides by ranking it first among Arab nations in the 2022 Global Gender Gap Report.

Women in Leadership: An Impressive Participation A monumental achievement lies in the robust participation of women in various spheres of influence, including politics, leadership, and decision-making roles. Their representation stands at a commendable 27.5 percent within the country’s ministerial formation. Notably, women’s participation escalates to an impressive 50 percent in the Federal National Council (FNC), boasting some of the highest rates regionally and globally.

Global Recognition: UAE’s Unrivaled Commitment Globally, the UAE’s commitment to gender parity is unrivaled. The country clinched the top spot for women’s parliamentary representation in both 2020 and 2021 within the Global Competitiveness Index by Switzerland’s Institute of Management Development. Similarly, in the Global Gender Gap Report for 2021 and 2022 by the World Economic Forum, the UAE led the pack in women’s parliamentary representation.

Legislative Empowerment: Enhancing Women’s Rights Reflecting its unwavering dedication, the UAE has introduced over 20 legislative amendments in recent years, spanning work, protection, political participation, personal status, and more. These changes are set to fortify women’s rights, enhance their gains, and fortify the nation’s global standing in terms of competitiveness.

A Bright Tomorrow: Emirati Women’s Day As Emirati Women’s Day dawns, it’s a moment to celebrate not just the achievements of Emirati women, but also the nation’s commitment to inclusivity, empowerment, and sustainability. With a resolute focus on collaboration for tomorrow, the UAE continues to be a beacon of progress in gender equality on the global stage.
