Gone are the days when people cornered vegetarians! The world is rapidly shifting towards vegetarianism and veganisam and so are a few restaurants and cafes. You’ll hardly find menus that don’t feature plant-based options. If you are one of those looking for a good plant-based meat in the UAE, we’ve got news! Abu Dhabi’s first-ever plant-based meat factory is finally making its way into the capital. Here’s what we know.
Located in the Khalifa Industrial Zone, Switch Foods’ factory is a home-grown startup that sprawls across 20,000 sq ft. Whenit opens on 1 May, Abu Dhabi’s first plant-based meat factory will serve 100 percent GMO-free, soy-free, allergen-free, gluten-free, vegan, and halal-certified kebabs, kofta, sujuk, minced meat and burger patties.

The factory is equipped to produce 1,000kg of plant-based meat per hour, or 8,000kg a day and boasts a high-tech production floor, a science lab, an innovation lab, and storage spaces for both raw materials and finished goods. Besides, the products are set to be the cheapest by far.
Edward Hamod, founder and CEO of Switch Foods, said, “We are excited to launch our game-changing plant-based meat production facility in KEZAD, Abu Dhabi, marking a significant milestone in our journey to transform the way people consume food in the UAE and their perception of plant-based meat.
“We aim to lead the transition to sustainable food systems by introducing localised, innovative plant-based meat alternatives that are healthier for both the environment and consumers.”
Hamod also revealed that restaurants have been expressing interest in collaborating with Switch Foods and developing recipes using their meat alternatives.

Middle East’s First 100% Plant-Based Meat Factory Opens In Dubai
Earlier, in March Dubai announced that it is all set to open Middle East’s first 100% plant-based meat factory. UAE has partnered with the IFFCO Group, one of the UAE’s largest producers of food products to open the factory. Located in the Dubai Industrial City, the THRYVE factory will catalyse the move towards a more sustainable and healthy food chain in the Middle East. As per Dubai Media Office, it will actively support the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals and the UAE’s Vision 2051 initiative to bolster food security through diversity and innovation.
The factory will provide healthy, sustainable and nutritious plant-based meat with delectable Middle Eastern flavours. The venture is developed using cutting-edge food technology and contributes to United Nation’s three sustainable development goals- good health and well-being, responsible consumption and production, and climate action.
