Rajkummar Rao’s ‘Bheed’ Trailer Exposes India’s Lockdown Woes in 2020

Do you recall the time when we were all confined to the sanctity of our homes during the COVID-19 outbreak? We definitely wouldn’t want to revisit those days, but while we were nestled within our own walls, we couldn’t help but hear about the hardships faced by daily wage migrant workers. The long-awaited movie ‘Bheed’ by Anubhav Sinha has finally unveiled its trailer, leaving viewers captivated and intrigued. The posters and teasers had already sparked curiosity among the audience, the new teaser has unravelled a tale that portrays the traumatic experiences endured during India’s COVID-19 lockdown in 2020.

Despite the black-and-white visuals that initially suggested a different era, the trailer of ‘Bheed’ has now made it clear that the film delves into the complexities of the lockdown period. With powerhouse actors like Rajkummar Rao and Bhumi Pednekar in the lead roles, the film promises to be a socio-political thriller that will take the audience on a journey like never before. The film is all set to hit the theatres on 24th March.

This black-and-white film exposes the darkest phase of the pandemic, which swept across the country. The film captures the poignant moment of partition that our generation experienced in 2020, drawing attention to the difficult situations faced by almost every citizen during the lockdown.

As the trailer of ‘Bheed begins’, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s voice echoes across the screen, announcing a nationwide lockdown in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. In the midst of this tumultuous time, Rajkummar Rao and Bhumi Pednekar play the roles of a courageous policeman and a compassionate social worker, respectively, risking their own lives to assist those in dire need.

What’s more, ‘Bheed’ paints a poignant picture of the migrant workers’ struggles as they are stranded at state borders, desperately searching for food and shelter. Bhumi Pednekar’s portrayal of a migrant worker captures the heart-wrenching plight of those who are most vulnerable during such times. On the other hand, Dia Mirza’s character represents the privileged section of society that is cut off from their homes and families, forced to confront the harsh reality of the pandemic. The stark contrast between these two characters showcases the deep divide that exists within our society, and the devastating impact it has on those who are already marginalized.

With scenes of cops brutally assaulting migrant workers and disinfectants being sprayed on them, the trailer paints a grim picture of the pandemic’s harsh realities. Despite this, Rajkummar Rao’s character remains steadfast, reminding us that justice is often in the hands of the powerful. The clip also features a poignant scene where Pankaj Kapur denies food offered by Muslim men to children on his bus, feeding into the dangerous rumors sparked by the Tablighi Jamat incident. In addition, Kritika Kamra’s portrayal of a journalist draws a powerful parallel between the Covid-19 lockdown and the 1947 Partition of India. The trailer’s powerful message lingers long after the clip has ended, reminding us of the importance of empathy and solidarity in times of crisis.

The teaser and trailer are in black & white and for the unversed, the entire film is made in the same colour format. ‘Bheed’ will be a complete black & white movie and this happens 12 years after the 84th Academy Award-winning French film ‘The Artist’ was made entirely in black & white.
