When it comes to Kajol, she’s always been that no-nonsense diva who speaks her mind delivers powerhouse performances, and never plays into the drama – unless it’s for the big screen, of course. But recently, a long-standing rumour decided to crawl out of the ‘90s vault, claiming that our girl was originally approached for Sunny Deol’s blockbuster Gadar. Kajol just revealed the whole truth.
Kajol clears the air about her connection with Gadar
In a classic Kajol move, equal parts fierce and fab – she crushed the Gadar gossip in one clean swoop during her recent chat at News18’s Rising Bharat Summit. Addressing the rumour that she was offered the iconic role of Sakina (that Ameesha Patel eventually made her own), Kajol simply said: “Gadar was not offered to me. It was a rumour.”
Because she doesn’t do half-baked opinions, she added a lesson for all the clout-chasers out there: “A lot of films were offered to me. I will not name them. Those films have been made. Some were hits, others weren’t. I think you can’t claim work which you haven’t done.”
Surnames Are So Last Season: Kajol Carved Her Own Path
Now here’s where it gets even more real. Kajol – who could’ve easily played the industry legacy card being Tanuja’s daughter and coming from cinematic royalty chose to ditch the surname and walk into Bollywood on her terms.
Talking about that decision, she revealed her mom had once asked her why she wouldn’t use her powerful last name. But Kajol, being the strong-headed firecracker she is, said she wanted no pressure, no privilege, and no lineage-based expectations. Just Kajol, plain and powerful.
She shared, “It was a conscious choice. Meri maa ne mujhe puchha tha jab main pictures mein aana chahti thi. Mujhe puchha tha ki you have such an amazing lineage from your grandmother and grandfather’s side as well. Mujhe uss waqt, aur abhi bhi, lagta hai ki mujhe kisi ki tarafdaari nahi karni thi. (My mother had asked me when I wanted to enter the industry. She had said, ‘You have such an amazing lineage from both your grandmother and grandfather’s side.’ But even then, and now, I feel that I didn’t want to take sides).”
Kajol continued, “I wanted to be true to myself and did not want the baggage of lineage. Toh isliye maine socha ki agar main sirf Kajol ke naam se jaani jaau, to shayad itna pressure nahi aayega mujh par. (That’s why I thought if I am known simply by the name Kajol, maybe there wouldn’t be as much pressure on me).”
What’s Next for Kajol?
While she’s busy shutting down baseless rumours, Kajol’s calendar is far from empty. She’s next set to shake things up in the supernatural thriller Maa, directed by Vishal Furia. And if that wasn’t exciting enough, she’s also teaming up with Dharma Productions for Sarzameen, starring alongside Ibrahim Ali Khan.
