Salik Toll System Update: Free Toll Hours and New Rates Announced

New Salik pricing system to ease traffic and reduce costs during free hours

Flexible Toll Pricing to Ease Dubai’s Traffic

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has unveiled a dynamic pricing system for Salik toll gates, set to launch on Friday, January 31, 2025. This change replaces the flat rate of Dhs4 with variable toll charges depending on the time of day. The new pricing aims to reduce congestion during peak hours and encourage off-peak travel, providing drivers with cost-saving opportunities.

What’s Changing in the Salik Toll System?

The updated pricing introduces free toll hours and higher charges during peak times. Here’s a detailed breakdown:

New Salik Pricing Structure

  • Free Hours: 1am – 6am daily (ideal for early risers).
  • Off-Peak Rates: Dhs4 during 10am – 4pm and 8pm – 1am daily.
  • Peak Hours: Dhs6 during 6am – 10am and 4pm – 8pm on weekdays (excluding Sundays).
  • Sunday Rates: Dhs4 all day, providing relief for weekend travelers.

Special Rates for Ramadan

During Ramadan, Salik tolls will follow a modified schedule:

  • Free Hours: 2am – 7am daily.
  • Off-Peak Rates: Dhs4 during 7am – 9am and 5pm – 2am on weekdays.
  • Peak Hours: Dhs6 from 9am – 5pm on weekdays.
  • Sunday Free Toll: No charges from 7am – 2am.

These changes reflect the RTA’s commitment to accommodating Dubai’s unique travel patterns, especially during the holy month.

Locations of Salik Toll Gates

Salik gates are positioned on some of Dubai’s busiest roads to streamline traffic flow. These include:

  • Sheikh Zayed Road (Al Safa and Al Barsha gates).
  • Business Bay and Jebel Ali gates.
  • Al Khail Road, including the new Business Bay Crossing gate.
  • Al Safa South, recently added to manage growing traffic.

With a total of 10 toll gates across the emirate, Salik’s expanded network ensures efficient coverage.

Benefits of the Dynamic Pricing System

The shift to flexible pricing offers several advantages:

  • Cost Savings: Free and lower-priced hours allow drivers to plan economical trips.
  • Reduced Congestion: Higher tolls during peak times encourage off-peak travel, alleviating traffic jams.
  • Better Commute Experience: Smoother traffic flow enhances overall road safety and reduces travel times.

How Drivers Can Adapt

Planning travel around free and off-peak hours for those commuting daily can significantly lower toll costs. Businesses reliant on delivery or logistics can also benefit by adjusting schedules to avoid peak rates.

To stay updated, drivers are encouraged to check the Salik app or website for real-time toll charges and detailed gate locations.

A Step for Dubai’s Traffic Management

The dynamic pricing system represents a major step in Dubai’s efforts to manage growing traffic. By incentivizing off-peak travel and optimizing road usage, the RTA aims to improve the commuting experience while ensuring smoother traffic flow across the emirate.
