Dubai Announces Dh34 Billion Gold Line Metro Project Connecting Key Areas by 2032

A fully underground Dubai Metro Gold Line will link major districts, ease congestion, and reshape city travel by September 9, 2032.

Dubai has unveiled its most ambitious transport upgrade yet. Announced by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the new Dubai Metro Gold Line is set to transform how residents move across the city.

The Dh34-billion project will be a fully underground line stretching 42 kilometres, connecting major residential and commercial hubs while integrating with Etihad Rail. Scheduled for completion on September 9, 2032, the Dubai Metro Gold Line is positioned as the largest transport project in the emirate’s history.

Dubai’s biggest metro expansion takes shape

The Dubai Metro Gold Line is not just another addition—it’s a significant expansion of the city’s public transport system. Running through 15 key areas, the line will serve around 1.5 million residents and connect more than 55 ongoing real estate developments.

The project will also increase the total length of the Dubai Metro from 120km to 162km. At the same time, the number of stations will grow from 67 to 85, making daily commuting more accessible across the emirate.

Authorities expect the line to handle up to 465,000 passengers daily by 2040. This reflects Dubai’s growing population and the rising demand for efficient, reliable transport options.

Reducing road congestion

One of the biggest benefits of the Gold Line is its impact on traffic. The project is expected to reduce more than 40 million car journeys each year, helping ease pressure on key roads across the city.

It will also reduce congestion on busy sections of the Red Line, especially between BurJuman and Business Bay, by up to 23%. This improvement alone could make a noticeable difference for regular commuters.

By offering smoother connections and shorter travel times, the line aims to improve the overall quality of life. Fewer cars on the road also support Dubai’s long-term sustainability goals, reducing emissions and promoting greener mobility.

Linking old and new Dubai seamlessly

The Gold Line will act as a central corridor linking old and new Dubai. The route starts from Al Ghubaiba and passes through several high-demand areas, including Mina Rashid, City Walk, Business Bay, Meydan, Al Barsha South, and Jumeirah Village Circle, before ending at Jumeirah Golf Estates.

It will connect with existing metro lines at multiple points:

  • Red Line connections at Business Bay and Jumeirah Golf Estates
  • Green Line connection at Al Ghubaiba

The integration with Etihad Rail at Meydan and Jumeirah Golf Estates is another key highlight. This move brings Dubai closer to a unified national transport system, making intercity travel more seamless.

How Dubai is building this mega metro project

Unlike previous lines, the Gold Line will be entirely underground, reaching depths of up to 40 metres. The project will use advanced tunnel-boring technology to minimize disruption to daily life and existing infrastructure.

Officials have confirmed that the underground network will be extensive—reportedly doubling the length of current metro tunnels. Construction is expected to begin after tendering in 2026 and contract awards in 2027.

There are also early discussions around integrating the project with the upcoming Dubai Loop, a high-speed underground system designed to cut travel times significantly. While details are still unclear, the concept signals Dubai’s long-term vision for futuristic mobility.

The tradition behind every metro opening

The completion date—September 9, 2032—is not random. It carries strong symbolic value in Dubai’s transport history.

The first Dubai Metro line was launched on 09.09.2009 at exactly 9:09:09 PM, marking a milestone moment for the city. Since then, every major metro expansion has followed the same date tradition.

  • The Green Line opened on September 9, 2011
  • The upcoming Blue Line is set for September 9, 2029

This consistent timeline reflects Dubai’s focus on precision, planning, and long-term vision.

The Dubai Metro Gold Line marks a new chapter in the city’s transport journey. With its fully underground design, wide coverage, and strong integration with existing networks, the project is set to reshape how people move across Dubai.

Beyond convenience, it brings long-term benefits—less traffic, better connectivity, and a more sustainable urban environment. As Dubai continues to grow, projects like this ensure the city stays ahead in infrastructure and innovation.
