Bollywood’s Mr. Perfectionist aka Aamir Khan is finally speaking out about Laapataa Ladies’ bittersweet Oscar journey. The Kiran Rao directorial, backed by Aamir Khan Productions, won hearts across India with its soulful storytelling and impactful satire. So much so, that it even made its way to the Oscars 2025 race!
But just when fans were hoping to see the film shine on the global stage, it got snubbed from the shortlist. It disappointed many. Now, Aamir Khan has finally broken his silence on why Laapataa Ladies didn’t make the cut and his take is as honest as it gets.
Aamir Khan Reacts About Laapataa Ladies’ Oscars Exit!
Speaking at the Ideas of India Summit 2025, Aamir was asked the million-dollar question – why didn’t Laapataa Ladies make it to the final Oscars list? And instead of dodging, he got straight to the point!
“It was a beautiful film, and there was no shortage on any front,” Aamir said. He explained that every country submits its best films, making the Best International Feature Film category one of the toughest competitions at the Oscars. With 80-85 films from across the world, the battle was bound to be intense!
Aamir, known for his practical and philosophical takes, didn’t shy away from addressing the reality of subjective choices in cinema. He shared, “Honestly, we have to understand that there are other language films that might have been genuinely better, or let me put it this way… films that the members liked better. It doesn’t mean we weren’t good… and it just means the members liked the other films better than ours. This is a very subjective decision.”
And here’s where he dropped the ultimate Bollywood analogy – “Okay, now you tell me which is the better film between Mother India and Mughal-e-Azam? Which film had better acting? How would you compare? That’s why I am saying it is all subjective.
Should We Take This Snub Too Seriously? Aamir Thinks Not!
While fans may still be sulking over the missed Oscar chance, Aamir has zero hard feelings. He said, “It isn’t like a race where the start point and end point is the same. Filmmaking and creative medium, in general, are very different. These are very personal choices, and very difficult to choose. So, don’t take it too seriously.”
His point? Filmmaking is an art, not a race. Unlike a sprint with a clear start and finish line, cinema is deeply personal, and every jury member brings their own perspective and emotions into the decision-making process.
Laapataa Ladies, starring Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava, Nitanshi Goel, Chhaaya Kadam, and Ravi Kishan, might have missed the Oscars shortlist, but its heartfelt storytelling has already left an unforgettable mark. And let’s be real – who needs an Oscar when the audience’s love is award enough?
What’s next for aamir?
Aamir Khan is gearing up for his much-anticipated film, Sitaare Zameen Par! This one’s extra special because it reunites him with Genelia Deshmukh, and fans are super hyped.
