The UAE government has declared that Sunday, September 15, 2024, will be a public holiday to celebrate the birthday of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). However, unlike what many might expect, this holiday won’t come with an extra day off. Work and normal routines will resume on Monday, September 16.
Why No Extra Day Off?
If you’re hoping for a long weekend, here’s the reality: the UAE does not shift public holidays that fall on weekends to a weekday, meaning there’s no bonus day off this time. This rule, however, is set to change soon. Starting next year, public holidays falling on weekends might get moved to a weekday under the new Cabinet Resolution No. 27 of 2024. But until then, residents have to stick to the usual schedule, so be ready to return to work the following Monday.

What Changes in 2025?
The new law will allow holidays that land on weekends to be moved, creating potential long weekends. For instance, a holiday on Sunday could shift to Monday, giving residents more time off. However, Eid Al-Fitr and Eid Al-Adha will still be celebrated on their respective days. This is something UAE residents can look forward to from 2025 onward.
