UAE Games 2026 Heads to Abu Dhabi with 1,000+ Athletes Set to Compete

Special Olympics UAE expands its national games this June with more athletes, new programmes, and international participation

There’s a different kind of energy building around the UAE Games 2026 this year. Come June, over 1,000 athletes will arrive in Abu Dhabi for the second edition of this growing national event, organised by Special Olympics UAE.

What started as a strong initiative in 2024 is now turning into something much bigger—more athletes, more sports, and a stronger sense of community across the UAE.

From Dubai Warm-Up to Abu Dhabi’s Main Stage

The games won’t begin in the capital just yet. The opening competitions—artistic and rhythmic gymnastics—will first take place in Dubai at Wellfit Gymnastics Academy in Circle Mall. It’s a fitting start, especially in a city that’s constantly pushing the boundaries of fitness and youth sports.

But soon after, everything moved to Abu Dhabi. The capital is set to host the main competitions across venues like ADNEC and Zayed Sports City’s Khalifa International Bowling Centre. Anyone familiar with these spaces knows they’re built for moments like this—large crowds, high energy, and events that bring people together from all walks of life.

More Athletes, More Representation

The jump in participation this year is hard to ignore. The first edition in 2024 welcomed over 600 athletes. This time, that number has crossed 1,000.

And it’s not just about numbers. Alongside athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities, there will be unified partners, students, coaches, and technical teams—all playing a role in making the event feel inclusive, not segmented.

You can expect to see teams supporting each other just as much as competing. That’s always been the spirit of Special Olympics, but here, it feels more visible than ever.

International Teams Join the Line-Up

Adding to the atmosphere this year are international delegations. Teams from Special Olympics Morocco and Special Olympics Malta are flying in to compete, bringing with them their own styles, strategies, and stories.

Morocco will take part in 7-a-side football, while Malta steps into bocce and bowling. It might seem like a small addition on paper, but on the ground, it changes the dynamic completely. There’s a different buzz when international teams are involved—more pride, more exchange, and definitely more excitement.

A Full Programme That Goes Beyond Competition

The sports line-up covers a good mix—basketball, football, badminton, powerlifting, bocce, and bowling. But what stands out is how thoughtfully the programme has been put together.

Running alongside the main events is the Motor Activity Training Program (MATP). It’s designed for athletes who need higher levels of support, making sure no one is left out of the experience. It’s not about medals here—it’s about participation, movement, and confidence.

Then there are the newer additions. The Young Athletes Program brings in younger participants, giving them early exposure to sport in a structured, supportive way. Esports is also making an appearance, which feels like a natural step given how fast the space is growing in the UAE.

And the Fit 5 fitness programme adds another layer, focusing on daily health habits—something that goes beyond the games themselves.

More Than Just a Sporting Event

One of the quieter but important parts of the UAE Games is the Partners Platform Day. It’s where organisations come together, sign agreements, and build partnerships that support People of Determination long after the games are over.

It may not grab headlines like the competitions do, but it’s where real, long-term impact often begins.

Across the UAE, there’s already a noticeable shift towards more inclusive spaces—whether in schools, workplaces, or public events. The UAE Games fit right into that larger picture.

The UAE Games 2026 isn’t just growing—it’s evolving. With more athletes, wider participation, and new programmes, it reflects how seriously the UAE is taking inclusive sport.

From the opening moments in Dubai to the main events in Abu Dhabi, this year’s edition is expected to feel bigger, more connected, and more meaningful for everyone involved.
