UAE’s Rashid Rover was about to land on the moon on Tuesday, April 25; however, Japan’s Hakuto-R Mission 1 spacecraft, carrying the Rashid Rover, got lost before landing on the moon on Tuesday. Post this unsuccessful trial, HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai took to his social media and announced that UAE would not accept defeat and will make a second attempt to land on the moon once again. The new mission will be the second attempt to land on the moon, and the rover will be called Rashid 2. Sheikh Mohammed tweeted, “The mission of the vehicle carrying the explorer Rashid did not succeed in landing on the surface of the moon… but we succeeded in raising the ceiling of our ambitions to reach the moon… and we succeeded in making a team of our young men and women capable of managing advanced space projects… and we succeeded in building a space sector from zero within 10-years.”
UAE Will Make The Attempt Again, Announces Sheikh Mohammed
Speaking about Rashid 1 and the evidence of UAE’s courage, Sheikh Mohammed added, “We are a country founded on ambition. We are a country that has not stopped since December 2, 1971. It will not stop. It will not turn around. It will not set small goals for itself. The coming is more beautiful, greater and bolder, God willing.”
Sheikh Mohammed was accompanied by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai, at the space centre. He said Sheikh Mohammed has “directed us to immediately start implementing the Rashid 2 project, a new attempt to land a rover on the Moon”.

Risk is an integral part of any space mission, but that has never deterred us from exploring new frontiers of space. Our ambition knows no bounds, and we remain steadfast in our commitment to undertake groundbreaking missions that will establish the UAE as a leading spacefaring nation.”

Both rovers are named after the late Sheikh Rashid, father of Sheikh Mohammed and founder of modern Dubai. In terms of the second launch, no date is announced for now; stay tuned for all the updates!
