New Travel Regulations for India-UAE Flights: What Not to Carry in Your Check-In Luggage!

Understanding the Regulations and Implications

As the India-UAE aviation corridor remains one of the busiest routes for travelers, authorities have recently unveiled a list of prohibited items for passengers flying from India to the United Arab Emirates. This update affects many expatriates who often carry sentimental items such as pickles and ghee, traditionally seen as tokens of love and care from family members, back to the UAE. Unfortunately, these cherished items are no longer permitted in check-in luggage, creating a wave of concern and confusion among travelers.

The List of Prohibited Items

The list of prohibited items now includes pickles, ghee, dried coconut (copra), matchboxes, crackers, paint, camphor, and various greasy culinary products. Additionally, passengers are reminded not to include spray bottles, power banks, lighters, and e-cigarettes in their checked baggage. These regulations aim to ensure the safety of all passengers, as items like power banks and lighters are prone to causing accidents during air travel.

A Growing Awareness Gap

Notably, many travelers remain unaware of these new restrictions, and the number of bags being rejected during check-in has increased over time. In one alarming instance, 943 dry coconuts were discovered in passenger check-in luggage in just one month. Dried coconut, with its high oil content, poses a significant fire hazard. These restrictions were initially implemented by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) in India in March 2022, but many travelers are still not informed about these changes.

Educating Travelers

Travelers must educate themselves about the rules and guidelines set by airports and airlines regarding what is and isn’t allowed in check-in luggage. The percentage of bags refused during check-in has risen from 0.31 percent to 0.73 percent between December 2022 and May 2023, underscoring the urgency of travelers being well-informed.

The Impact on Busy Travel Corridors

The India-UAE aviation corridor is particularly busy due to Indians traveling for work, leisure, and business. With the holiday season fast approaching, the number of tourists is expected to surge further. Consequently, the cases of check-in baggage being rejected due to the presence of prohibited items are on the rise, affecting both local and international travelers.

Shared Responsibility for Safety

In this endeavor to ensure safety, both passengers and airports bear equal responsibility. It is imperative for travelers to familiarize themselves with the list of prohibited items, and to manage their personal belongings and restricted substances correctly. This cooperative effort is crucial to guarantee a hassle-free and secure journey for all.

Don’t Leave Home Uninformed

Before embarking on a trip, it is advisable to check the list of prohibited items to prevent any unexpected complications during the check-in process. Travelers are encouraged to prioritize learning about and comprehending the rules imposed by the airport and airlines. Remember, ensuring your safety and that of your fellow passengers is a shared responsibility and adherence to safety regulations is vital for a smooth and secure trip.
