Dubai’s RTA will install a new Salik toll gate at Al Safa South on Sheikh Zayed Road. This new toll gate, set to be operational by November 2024, aims to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion. It will be the 10th addition to Dubai’s extensive Salik network.
Traffic Congestion in Dubai
Dubai, known for its rapid growth and development, has long struggled with traffic congestion. The city’s growing population and increasing number of vehicles have put a lot of pressure on its road infrastructure. Commuters often find themselves stuck in long traffic jams, leading to frustration and lost productivity.
The Daily Struggle of Commuters
For many residents and visitors, navigating Dubai’s roads during peak hours can be challenging. The constant stop-and-go traffic and the stress of reaching destinations on time make commuting a daily struggle. The need for an effective solution to manage traffic flow and reduce congestion has never been more urgent.
The New Salik Toll Gate
The introduction of the new Salik toll gate at Al Safa South is part of RTA’s plan to develop and integrate road networks, public transport routes, and services. This initiative aims to encourage public transport usage and reduce dependence on private vehicles.
Located between Al Meydan Street and Umm Al Sheif Street, the new toll gate will operate alongside the existing Al Safa North gate. Commuters will pay a single tariff when crossing between the two gates within a one-hour window, simplifying the toll process.
Benefits of the New Toll Gate
The new toll gate is expected to bring several benefits to Dubai’s road network:
- Reduced Congestion: By distributing traffic across alternative routes such as Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, Dubai-Al Ain Road, and Ras Al Khor Road, the new toll gate will help reduce congestion on Sheikh Zayed Road.
- Encouraging Public Transport: The toll gate is part of a broader strategy to promote the use of public transport, including the metro, buses, and marine transport. This shift will reduce the number of private vehicles on the road, easing traffic.
- Improved Travel Times: Studies have shown that existing toll gates have significantly reduced travel times on key routes. The new gate is expected to continue this trend, making commutes faster and more efficient.

Strategic Implementation
The installation of the new toll gate is aligned with the completion of the Al Khail Road Improvement Project, which includes the construction of five intersections and braided ramps. These enhancements are designed to provide rapid traffic solutions at key points along Al Khail Road, further optimizing traffic flow.
His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, emphasized the importance of toll gates in supporting Dubai’s roads infrastructure and public transport projects. “Toll gates are part of transport policies aimed at distributing traffic across the entire road network, achieving optimal use of those roads,” he said.
A Sustainable Solution
The new Salik toll gate is not just a short-term fix but a sustainable solution for Dubai’s traffic issues. By encouraging the use of public transport and optimizing traffic flow, the toll gate will contribute to a more efficient and environmentally friendly transportation system.
As Dubai grows, the new Salik toll gate will help the city’s infrastructure keep up. Commuters can look forward to smoother, faster journeys, making daily commutes less stressful and more enjoyable.
The new Salik toll gate at Al Safa South represents a significant step towards better traffic management in Dubai. By tackling congestion and promoting public transport, the RTA is creating a more efficient transportation system. When the toll gate opens in November 2024, commutes will improve, making Dubai more appealing.
