This Met Gala 2025, the game changed. No more just oohing over Western couture, Bollywood brought the bling, and Indian designers finally got their spotlight moment on fashion’s biggest stage. The world noticed. But just when we were ready to pop the bubbly for desi domination, some keyboard critics started crying “Chandivalification of Met.” Enter: Janhvi Kapoor with a clapback so fiery.
Janhvi Kapoor takes a stand for indian designers
Picture this: Diljit Dosanjh serving royal-core realness in Prabal Gurung. Shah Rukh Khan looked like couture’s crown jewel in Sabyasachi. Kiara Advani shone brighter than the Met’s chandeliers in Gaurav Gupta. India didn’t just attend – it took over the Met Gala. Global fashion police handed out 10s across the board. But some desi trolls had other ideas. They mocked it as the “Chandivalification of Met.” Yes, someone actually said that.
Janhvi wasn’t having any of it. Sliding into Diet Sabya’s comments like a boss, she delivered a monologue that deserves its own Met Gala moment. She expressed, “It was high time. Our artisans and designers are the best in the world, they deserve the spotlight on a global stage like the Met. As do our icons (heart icon)”. She continued, “Shouldn’t we be happy we’re finally getting our due instead of salty about how seeing our own people on this platform is making it seem a little less aspirational?”
Janhvi went in, reminding everyone that the Met didn’t get downgraded because Indians showed up – it got elevated. She added, “Might I say our garments were amongst the most spectacular. Amusing how we’re being almost classist towards ourselves, clearly colonial trauma hasn’t left us”.

The Global Stage Is Finally Catching Up to Indian Craft
She didn’t stop at comebacks – Janhvi also spoke about the historical snub of Indian artisans whose work was used (read: appropriated) without credit for decades. From embroidery to fabrics to jewellery, the world has long borrowed without a thank-you note. But now, the makers are getting the Met-level respect they deserve, and Janhvi’s here for it.
She shared, “I’m glad our people are finally getting the chance to represent so much of our work and heritage. If anything, the sense of pride I felt seeing our artists and garments at the Met made whole affair seem even more magical.”
India at Met Gala 2025: Icons, Ensembles, and a Whole Lot of Elegance
Besides Diljit and SRK turning heads, Kiara Advani made her Met debut with her signature poise, and Manish Malhotra proved why he’s couture royalty. Fashion powerhouses like Sabyasachi, glam queens like Natasha Poonawalla, and billionaire boss lady Isha Ambani also made sure India wasn’t just seen – it was remembered.
The 2025 Met Gala wasn’t just a fashion moment – it was a cultural reset. If you think the presence of Indian celebrities diluted it, maybe it’s time to check your colonial baggage at the door. As Janhvi Kapoor said loud and clear – this isn’t “Chandivalification.” It’s vindication.
