To tackle hunger and poverty globally, every year, during the holy month of Ramadan, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, launches the “1 Billion Meals Endowment” campaign. The campaign aims to provide a food safety net for the world’s most underprivileged populations, especially in countries struggling with food insecurity.

It also aims to support vulnerable groups, especially victims of natural disasters, conflicts and crises around the world. Be it a donation of AED10 or AED1 Million, people across UAE join hands and do their bit. And the latest one to join the bandwagon is Dubai’s Emirates Airlines. The airline has pledged AED10 million to the campaign. Read on to know more about it.

Dubai’s National Carrier- Emirates Airlines, has pledged AED10 million to the campaign. Speaking about this, Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, Chairman and CEO of Emirates Airline and Group, said: “The “1 Billion Meals Endowment” campaign is a practical example of Sheikh Mohammed’s vision for sustainable good and charity, which creates hope and leads to a better future for all.”
Speaking about the support, he added: “Our support for the campaign reflects our commitment to help improve the quality of life in underprivileged communities, especially those served by Emirates around the world. We are honoured to be part of the campaign and its efforts to provide a food safety net in countries struggling with food insecurity.”

In fact, on 8th April, Saturday night, an auction took place in Dubai where the bidder paid AED55 million for the number 7 number plate. The auction sold other name plates and exclusive mobile numbers and raised nearly a whopping AED100 million, $27 million for UAE’s ‘1 Billion Meals Campaign.
Sold number plates include- H31, W78, N41, AA19, AA22, X36, Z37, AA80 and more. The auction was conducted at the Four Seasons Hotel in Jumeirah and was organised by Emirates Auction, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority, Etisalat and Du. P7 topped the list and was sold for AED55 million, breaking the 2008 record set by Emirati businessman Saeed Khouri, who paid $14.2 million for Abu Dhabi’s number 1 plate at a charity auction in 2008. Apart from P7, Dubai number plate AA 19 was sold for AED4.9 million, and O71 for AED2.1 million.
All proceeds from the auction were for HH Sheikh Mohammed’s One Billion Meals Campaign, which aims to fight global hunger. The anonymous buyer’s generous contribution will go a long way in helping provide much-needed meals for people in need across the world.
