Dubai’s duty free named the world’s top airport retailer

There’s something about Dubai International airport- isn’t it? Well, it’s not for nothing that’s its called one of the busiest airports in the world. Apart from being home to a zillion travellers, DXB is also a hub for shopaholics. With Duty Free at its best, DXB offers a whole lot of luxurious things, at a reduced cost. And now, Dubai’s Duty Free has been named as the world’s top airport retailer. Since its opening in December 1983, Dubai Duty Free has grown into one of the biggest travel retail operators in the world.

The Dubai Media Office, in its recent tweet, mentioned that Dubai Duty Free is the world’s top retail outlet. DXB’s duty free has contributed to AED 105+ billion sales in the last four decades. The Duty Free shopping area in DXB sprawls 40,000+ square metres and has over 5000+ employees, assisting shoppers. In 2022, DXB’s duty free recorded a massive AED 6.3 billion sales, taking up the number by 77%.

Founded in 1983, Dubai Duty Free recorded first-year sales of US$20 million and has grown into one of the biggest travel retail operators in the world with sales turnover of AED 6.339 billion or US$1.74 billion in 2022.

Now employing over 5,000 people, the operation has consistently raised the benchmark for airport retailing and it continues to grow. In addition to a remarkable turnover, Dubai Duty Free has continued its investment in the development and expansion of its retail offer both in Dubai International Airport and at Al Maktoum International Airport.

While the successful running of the shopfloor is a major focus for Dubai Duty Free, the operation is highly committed to promoting Dubai through a series of high level sporting events including the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, Dubai Duty Free Irish Open and Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby to name a few. To date, Dubai Duty Free has received over 750 awards including the Frontier Award for ‘Airport Retailer of the Year’, which was won by the operation for a record tenth time.
