AED183,605 watch with HH Sheikh Mohammed’s name to be auctioned in Dubai

Dubai is known for all things glitz and glamour. From high-end brands to skyscrapers and plush cars, the city screams luxury from every nook and corner. But, here’s the mother of ’em all! A luxury watch which features HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid’s name on it is now on auction and it looks absolutely ‘royal’. Seen the pics yet?

the royal watch is estimated at a whopping $30,000 to $50,000

The bidding for the luxury vinatge Audermars Piguet watch is set to go on auction at Christie’s on April 24. And now, moving over to the details of the watch. Firstly, the royal watch has an estimated value of $30,000 to $50,000. The royal Maktoum Dial is a masterpiece of the Swiss watchmaker’s Royal Oak collection, especially known for its sleek octagonal bezel and intricate tapisserie dial.

The watch is a masterpiece designed by Jacqueline Dimier and is one of the only 2,130 yellow gold pieces manufactured between 1977 and 1988. What makes this royal watch even more special is that it the top half of the 35mm watch features the signature of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai. The bottom half shows the Audemars Piguet script.

The watch was made in the 1980s, a time when HH Sheikh Mohammed was serving as the country’s minister of defence. The timepiece will be sold with its Audemars Piguet extract.

“Sheikh Mohammed’s name has appeared on vintage Rolex wristwatches in the past, but we have rarely come across his signature on vintage Audemars Piguet models,” said Christie’s.

According to the auction house, these expensive wristwatches, which are frequently given as state gifts, are known as “Arabic dials” among collectors’ circles. A Patek Philippe clock with Sheikh Mohammed’s signature and an engraving of the UAE crest, went on sale in 2018.

The auction at Christie’s Watches Online: The Dubai Edit, is set to feature 136 luxury watches, including the Maktoum Dial piece. Also on the auction is a Richard Mille 69- valued at a whopping $800,000 to $1.2 million. It is one of only 30 pieces ever made. Patek Philippe and Rolex however, will lead the auction’s vintage watch selection. Pieces from other brands like FP Journe, MB &, De Bethune and Ludovic Ballouard are also part of the popular biannual sale.

The auction will continue until May 4. The auction house will have all the watches on display in its gallery at the Dubai International Financial Centre, during the 10-day auction, from 10am to 7pm.

Well, this is not the first time such a royal piece is going on auction. On 23 March 2018, a rare, specially-commissioned Rolex GMT-Master with HH Sheikh Mohammed’s name made its public debut. The watch was worth between AED440,000 and AED 580,000.
