Abu Dhabi has taken a major step toward sustainable urban mobility by converting Bus Service No. 65 into a fully eco-friendly operation. The Integrated Transport Centre (ITC), also known as Abu Dhabi Mobility, announced that the route will now be served exclusively by green buses powered by advanced hydrogen and electric technologies. This initiative aligns with Abu Dhabi’s broader commitment to reducing carbon emissions and enhancing public transport services.

The conversion of Bus Service No. 65 is part of Abu Dhabi’s long-term strategy to develop a more environmentally friendly public transport network. The emirate has set an ambitious goal to establish a Public Transport Green Zone on the island by 2030. Introducing green buses reinforces Abu Dhabi’s aim to lead in regional sustainable transportation.
Route 65: Connecting Key Destinations
Bus Service No. 65 is one of the busiest routes in Abu Dhabi, connecting Marina Mall to Al Reem Island. This route serves approximately 6,000 passengers daily and covers over 2,000 kilometers each day. Abu Dhabi’s shift to green buses ensures cleaner, more efficient public transport for thousands of commuters. The use of hydrogen and electric-powered buses will reduce air pollution and improve the overall travel experience.
The Green Bus Programme: Driving Innovation
The transformation of Bus Service No. 65 is part of the broader Green Bus Programme launched by the ITC in November 2023. The program focuses on identifying and implementing the most suitable hydrogen and electric technologies for Abu Dhabi’s climate and infrastructure. Abu Dhabi’s shift to green buses ensures cleaner, more efficient public transport for thousands of commuters.
Building Expertise and Enhancing Operations
To support the shift to green buses, the ITC has introduced comprehensive training programs for bus operators and maintenance staff. Drivers and technicians receive training to operate and maintain green buses. This initiative enables the public transport workforce to effectively manage and operate the new technology.
Positive Environmental Impact
The shift to green buses is expected to have a substantial environmental impact. The ITC estimates that this transition will reduce annual carbon dioxide emissions in Abu Dhabi by over 100,000 metric tonnes — equivalent to removing approximately 14,700 cars from the roads. This reduction will significantly improve air quality and contribute to Abu Dhabi’s commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2050.
Expanding Green Routes
Following the success of Route 65, the ITC plans to convert additional routes to green buses. Upcoming plans include converting Route 160, which connects Capital Park with Khalifa City, and Route A2, linking Abu Dhabi City to Zayed International Airport. Expanding the use of green buses will help Abu Dhabi strengthen its position as a regional leader in sustainable urban transport.
Aligning with Global Sustainability Goals
Abu Dhabi’s Green Bus Programme supports the UAE’s Net Zero by 2050 strategy and aligns with international sustainability commitments, including the Paris Agreement. By adopting zero-emission transport solutions, Abu Dhabi is setting a strong example for other cities looking to implement sustainable public transport systems.
Paving the Way for a Greener Future
The conversion of Bus Service No. 65 to a fully eco-friendly operation marks a significant milestone in Abu Dhabi’s journey toward sustainable transportation. Through strategic planning, technological innovation, and global partnerships, Abu Dhabi is transforming its public transport network. The expansion of green routes will further reduce emissions and enhance the travel experience for residents and visitors alike.
