Al Wasl is set to undergo a significant transformation. Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has unveiled a sweeping redevelopment of Al Wasl Road, designed to ease traffic congestion, improve connectivity, and enhance the urban environment. The 15-kilometre project will stretch from the intersection with Umm Suqeim Street to the junction with 2nd December Street.
The ambitious upgrade includes five new tunnels and lane expansions that aim to boost the road’s capacity from 8,000 to 12,000 vehicles per hour in both directions. Once complete, the project is expected to reduce travel times along the corridor by up to 50 percent, providing relief to daily commuters and improving the overall driving experience in the area.
As part of our master plan to upgrade #Dubai’s road network, #RTA has announced an integrated project to upgrade Al Wasl Street, covering Umm Suqeim and Al Safa Streets. A strategic move to support Dubai’s growing mobility needs
The Al Wasl Road upgrade is more than just a traffic initiative—it’s part of Dubai’s long-term vision to support smart mobility and sustainable urban development. As a vibrant corridor connecting residential zones, hospitality destinations, and coastal attractions, Al Wasl sees a high volume of traffic throughout the day. This project will directly benefit over a million residents, local businesses, and tourists who frequently pass through the area.
According to the RTA, the development includes the enhancement of six major intersections—Al Thanya, Al Manara, Umm Al Sheif, Umm Amara, Al Orouba, and Al Safa Streets. Engineers are redesigning these bottleneck junctions to improve vehicle flow and enhance safety at crossings.
Five new tunnels to ease congestion across key junctions
One of the most impactful aspects of the project is the construction of five tunnels across strategic intersections, totalling 3,850 metres in length. Here’s what to expect:
- Al Manara Street Intersection: A unidirectional tunnel with three lanes branching into two routes—two lanes from Sheikh Zayed Road to Jumeirah Street, and another two to Umm Suqeim Street. Combined, this tunnel will handle around 4,500 vehicles per hour.
- Umm Al Sheif Street Intersection: A 750-metre-long tunnel featuring two lanes heading from Sheikh Zayed Road to Jumeirah Street, with a maximum capacity of 3,200 vehicles per hour.
- Umm Amara Street Intersection: A 700-metre tunnel with two lanes in each direction, handling up to 6,400 vehicles per hour.
- Al Orouba Street Intersection: A single-direction tunnel heading toward Jumeirah Street, with capacity for 1,400 vehicles per hour.
- Al Safa Street Intersection: A two-lane tunnel in both directions designed to accommodate 6,400 vehicles per hour.
These tunnels will provide alternative routes, relieve pressure at ground-level intersections, and facilitate smoother transitions between Al Wasl Road and surrounding districts.
Surface-level improvements and pedestrian-focused design
The redevelopment isn’t just about road capacity—it also aims to enhance liveability for pedestrians and cyclists. The RTA’s urban strategy adds walkways, cycling tracks, and boulevards to boost walkability and outdoor activity.
Five intersections along nearby Jumeirah Street will also receive surface-level enhancements. The Al Satwa roundabout, in particular, will be transformed into a signalised junction. These changes aim to better regulate vehicle flow while supporting safer, more accessible crossings for non-motorists.
Al Wasl’s transformation in line with Dubai’s urban planning goals
This overhaul is in harmony with Dubai’s broader infrastructure and sustainability goals. The development of Al Wasl Road reflects ongoing efforts to balance efficient transportation with vibrant, community-friendly public spaces.
By integrating mobility solutions with beautification efforts, the RTA continues to deliver projects that meet the needs of both residents and future growth. Similar redevelopment initiatives have already been launched for Umm Suqeim Street and Jumeirah Street, as the city reinforces its commitment to smarter, safer roads.
What residents can expect once complete
For daily commuters, residents, and business owners in the Al Wasl area, the benefits will be noticeable. Reduced travel times, less congestion at key junctions, and alternative tunnel routes will make travel more predictable and less stressful. Improved roads and pedestrian zones make Al Wasl more accessible and connected than ever.
The addition of green spaces and urban landscaping will further uplift the visual and environmental appeal of the district. This makes Al Wasl not just easier to navigate, but more enjoyable to live in.
