People from all countries, except Emirati citizens and citizens of GCC countries need a residence visa to live in the UAE.

To become a UAE resident and obtain a residence permit, there are a few requirements that you have to fulfil. First and foremost, you should be working in the UAE, under a governmental office or in a private company. If you are a student wanting to become a UAE resident, then you have to study in a UAE educational institution. Besides this, you can also obtain a UAE residence visa if you are the dependent of a UAE citizen or foreign resident (child, parent, maid, or a close relative).

Besides, if you own a property in Dubai worth more than 1 million dirhams, you can apply for a two-year residence visa. However, this type of visa is an investor visa, and you cannot work on this visa in the UAE.

What Are The Types Of UAE Residence Visa?

When it comes to residence permit in the UAE, different types of visas differ from person to person. If you are working in the UAE and have a work permit, you get the UAE work visa; students who come to the country to study- get a UAE student visa, whereas the UAE Family Visa is issued to close relatives of the UAE citizens or foreign residents.

UAE Investment Visa is for foreign nationals who have a substantial investment in the UAE. Next comes the UAE Retirement Visa, which is for elderly foreigners who want to retire in the country and have enough financial means to do so.

Process To Get The UAE Residence Visa

  • First Step

To obtain a residence visa, first and foremost, you must apply for your entry permit- in some cases, like for doctors and teachers, additional documents are necessary for the permit. For the application, you need to sumbit a valid passport copy with at least six months validity with a colour photograph with a white background.

  • Second Step

Once you get the entry permit and arrive in the country, you need to obtain your residence visa. For that, you will have it pass a medical exam as part of the employment process, then apply for a Labour Card as well as an Emirates ID. You cannot do without these documents in the UAE- from opening a bank account to obtaining a driver’s license- you need these documents. In fact, your Emirates ID gets linked to your visa and passport automatically. While all this is necessary, you must remember that all foreign nationals wanting to live in the UAE on a residence visa should pass the medical exam to prove their fitness- this is non-negotiable.

What Is The UAE Residence Visa Fee?

The fees for a UAE Residence visa change based on the requirement; for one year, the fee is AED100. Additionally, you will pay other charges like a processing fee, approximately AED70. 

How Long Is UAE Residence Visa Valid?

You have renew your residence visa 30 days before it expires, and based on your purpose, you get a visa for 1, 2 or 3 years. Investment and Retirement visas are issues for 5-10 years and are renewable.
