UAE to Sight Dhu Al Hijjah Moon on May 17 Ahead of Eid Al Adha

The UAE will begin the official Dhu Al Hijjah moon-sighting process on May 17 using advanced observatories across the country.

The announcement will determine the start of Dhu Al Hijjah, Arafat Day, and Eid Al Adha 2026 in the UAE.

As the UAE moves closer to Eid Al Adha, attention is once again turning to the skies.

The UAE Council for Fatwa has confirmed that the crescent moon marking the start of Dhu Al Hijjah will be observed on the evening of Sunday, May 17. The sighting will officially determine the beginning of the Islamic month connected to Hajj and Eid Al Adha celebrations across the country.

Every year, this announcement becomes a major moment for residents. Families begin planning holidays, airlines prepare for one of the busiest travel periods of the season, and hotels across Dubai start seeing a rise in staycation bookings.

This year, the UAE will carry out the moon-sighting process using a combination of traditional observation methods and advanced astronomical technology through specialized observatories nationwide.

Advanced observatories across the UAE will track the crescent moon

The moon-sighting process will take place on the 29th day of Dhu Al Qadah 1447 AH, corresponding to May 17.

Authorities confirmed that multiple astronomy centres and observatories will participate in the observation process. Among them is Al Khatm Astronomical Observatory, working alongside the International Astronomy Centre. Dubai Sky Views Observatory will also take part in coordination with Dubai’s Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department, while Sharjah Astronomical Observatory will support the effort with the Sharjah Academy for Astronomy, Space Sciences and Technology.

In recent years, the UAE has invested heavily in astronomy and space science. That progress is now becoming increasingly visible during important Islamic occasions like Ramadan and Eid moon sightings.

Inside these observatories, astronomers use high-powered telescopes, digital imaging systems, and advanced tracking tools to monitor the moon’s visibility. While the tradition of physically sighting the crescent remains central to the process, technology now helps improve precision and reduce uncertainty.

It is a blend the UAE has become known for — preserving Islamic traditions while embracing innovation.

The Dhu Al Hijjah moon sighting is important

The beginning of Dhu Al Hijjah holds deep religious significance for Muslims worldwide. It marks the final month of the Islamic calendar and includes some of the most important days in Islam.

Arafat Day falls on the ninth day of Dhu Al Hijjah, followed by Eid Al Adha on the tenth day.

For residents in the UAE, the moon-sighting announcement is more than a religious update. It also signals the beginning of the busy Eid period across the country.

In Dubai, shopping malls usually begin extending operating hours ahead of Eid. Popular attractions roll out family entertainment offers, while restaurants prepare festive menus and special dining experiences. Areas like Downtown Dubai, City Walk, and Global Village-style seasonal venues often see heavier crowds during long public holidays.

Travel demand also climbs sharply around this time. Airports become busier, roads heading toward staycation destinations fill up quickly, and many residents take advantage of the break to travel abroad or spend time with family.

Residents await confirmation of Eid Al Adha holidays

Following the moon sighting, UAE authorities are expected to officially announce the Eid Al Adha holiday dates for the public and private sectors.

Many residents are already anticipating a long break. Across Dubai and Abu Dhabi, hotels have started promoting early Eid staycation offers, especially at beachfront resorts and family-friendly properties.

Travel agencies are also reporting growing interest in short regional getaways as residents look to finalize plans before ticket prices rise further.

For families, Eid preparations often begin days before the official announcement. Markets become busier, gift shopping increases, and homes prepare for gatherings and celebrations.

In neighbourhoods across Dubai, from Al Barsha to Mirdif, the festive atmosphere usually starts building well before Eid officially begins.

UAE continues strengthening its astronomy leadership

The UAE’s role in astronomy and space science has expanded significantly over the past decade.

Beyond moon sightings, the country has invested in research centres, observatories, and major space projects that have positioned it as a regional leader in scientific innovation.

Sharjah and Dubai, in particular, have become home to several astronomy-focused educational initiatives that encourage public interest in celestial events and space exploration.

The Dhu Al Hijjah moon sighting is one of the clearest examples of how those scientific advancements now support important cultural and religious moments across the country.

Eid season preparations are already underway

Although the official moon-sighting result will only be confirmed on May 17, preparations for Eid Al Adha are already visible across the UAE.

Retail stores have started introducing festive collections, supermarkets are preparing seasonal promotions, and entertainment venues are announcing upcoming Eid activities.

For many residents, Eid Al Adha is one of the most meaningful times of the year — not only spiritually, but socially as well. It is a period when families gather, communities come together, and cities across the UAE take on a noticeably festive atmosphere.

All eyes will now turn to the evening sky on May 17 as the country awaits the official confirmation of Dhu Al Hijjah and the start of the Eid countdown.
