The UAE strengthens its global innovation leadership with the Smart Mobility Data Lab in Ras Al Khaimah, where students collaborate with engineers to design and test self-driving cars.
A Hub for Future Mobility
The Smart Mobility Data Lab will focus on twelve advanced initiatives aimed at revolutionizing urban transportation. These include autonomous vehicle (AV) development, predictive maintenance, AI-based crowd management, and urban planning simulation. The lab will serve as an educational and research hub, fostering innovation while empowering students with hands-on experience in cutting-edge mobility solutions.
A Vision for Smart and Sustainable Transport
Eng Esmaeel Hasan Al Blooshi, Director General of RAKTA, highlighted the strategic vision behind the lab. “The launch of the Data Lab reflects our ongoing commitment to using innovation and advanced technologies to shape the future of transportation,” he stated. Al Blooshi emphasized that the initiative aligns with Ras Al Khaimah’s goal to develop smart, efficient, and eco-friendly mobility systems.
The lab also supports the UAE’s broader vision for autonomous transport. Following the 2019 approval of the first national licence for self-driving cars, the country has rapidly advanced AV technology. Abu Dhabi launched self-driving taxis in 2024, and Dubai is planning a similar initiative.
Bridging Academia and Industry
Dr David Andrew Schmidt, President of AURAK, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration with RAKTA. “We are proud to collaborate with RAKTA in launching this visionary project. The Data Lab offers our students invaluable opportunities to apply their knowledge in real-world scenarios that support Ras Al Khaimah’s development,” Schmidt noted.
The collaboration between academia and industry aims to prepare students for careers in emerging mobility technologies. By driving university-level innovation, the lab aims to create a workforce ready for the evolving transportation sector.
A Strategic Initiative Aligned with National Goals
The launch of the Smart Mobility Data Lab is part of the Year of the Community 2025, a national initiative aimed at strengthening community bonds through innovation and education. By providing students with practical skills and exposure to industry challenges, the lab reinforces Ras Al Khaimah’s commitment to future-ready education.
Transforming Transportation Through Innovation
The UAE’s ongoing investment in smart mobility is not only about technological progress but also about building a sustainable future. As self-driving cars grow, the Smart Mobility Data Lab will help shape future engineers and innovators.
The Smart Mobility Data Lab empowers Ras Al Khaimah students to lead in autonomous vehicle technology, bridging academics with real-world innovation for smarter, sustainable transport in the UAE.
