UAE Revises Friday School Hours From January 9

The UAE Ministry of Education and KHDA have announced a major update to school timings, ensuring all students are home well before the new 12:45 pm Friday prayer time.

If you’ve lived in the UAE long enough, you know that Fridays have a special rhythm. It’s the day the city slows down just a little, the scent of oud fills the air near the mosques, and families gear up for the most important prayer of the week.

However, starting January 9, 2026, that rhythm is getting a bit of a remix. The UAE Ministry of Education (MoE) and Dubai’s Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) have officially synchronized the school clock with the spirit of the community. With the nationwide Friday prayer time moving to 12:45 pm, schools are letting out earlier than ever to make sure nobody is caught in the “Jumeirah crawl” or “Hessa Street hustle” when the Adhan sounds.

The New Timetable: Who Goes Home When?

The updated UAE Friday school hours aren’t just a “one size fits all” deal. The Ministry has carefully staggered the finish times for public schools to prevent the entire country from hitting the roads at the exact same second. If your kids are in a government school, here is the official breakdown:

CategoryFriday Finish Time
Public Schools (Max)11:30 am
Dubai Private SchoolsNo later than 11:30 am
Friday Prayer Time12:45 pm
Effective DateJanuary 9, 2026
  • Kindergarten (KG): The little ones will be done by 11:30 am.
  • Cycle 1 (Primary): Schools can choose between a 7:10 am to 10:30 am shift or an 8:00 am to 11:30 am window.
  • Cycles 2 & 3 (Middle & High School): * Boys: An early start at 7:10 am means they wrap up by 10:30 am.
    • Girls: A slightly later start at 8:00 am sees them finishing at 11:30 am.

This 11:30 am “hard cap” is the magic number. It gives families a solid 75-minute window to get home, freshen up, and head to the mosque before the 12:45 pm sermon begins.

Private Schools: The Dubai Directive

For those with kids in Dubai’s private sector—whether it’s a British curriculum in Al Barsha or an American school in Mirdif—the KHDA has been very clear. All private schools and early childhood centres in the emirate must end their Friday sessions no later than 11:30 am.

While many schools previously stayed open until 12:00 pm, this extra half-hour is a massive win for parents. It’s the difference between a stressful dash and a calm commute. Some schools are even getting creative by offering online learning for students in Grade 6 (Year 7) and above on Fridays, though this requires a thumbs-up from both the KHDA and the parents.

Beyond the Clock: Stricter Rules for 2026

It’s not all about early finishes, though. The UAE is doubling down on “Quality Time” over “Skipped Time.” Along with the new hours, the Ministry has introduced a much stricter attendance policy.

In a move to curb “strategic long weekends,” an unexcused absence on a Friday can now be counted as two days of absence. With a limit of just 15 unexcused absences per year before a student risks repeating the grade, those spontaneous family trips to Ras Al Khaimah might need to wait until after the final bell. It’s a clear message: the school week is shorter, so every hour counts.

Living the “Dubai Life”: The Cultural Impact

This shift is deeply rooted in the UAE’s “Year of the Family” initiative. By standardizing the prayer time to 12:45 pm and ending school by 11:30 am, the government is essentially handing back time to the community.

For many expats and locals alike, this means Friday lunch—the legendary Mandi or Biryani sessions—can happen earlier. It allows the “school run” to transition smoothly into the “Friday vibe,” making the weekend feel just a little bit longer and a lot more relaxed.

As the city continues to grow, these logistical tweaks are what keep Dubai moving. Whether you’re navigating the school gates in Sharjah or picking up your kids in Abu Dhabi, these new UAE Friday school hours prioritize student well-being without compromising on world-class education.

What Parents Should Check Today?:

  • Bus Timings: Most school transport providers are currently re-routing to meet the 10:30 am/11:30 am windows.
  • Extracurriculars: Check if your school shifted Friday afternoon football or ballet to Saturday.
  • Parent Portals: Look out for circulars regarding potential “Online Friday” trials for older kids.

The January 9 change is a permanent fixture of the 2026 academic calendar. It’s a small shift in the morning, but a huge boost for family life across the Emirates.
