The National Centre of Meteorology has issued a new UAE heat alert, cautioning residents to prepare for another punishing day of extreme heat. As temperatures push dangerously close to 50°C across the country, Dubai and other major cities continue to swelter under a combination of intense sun, humidity, and dry winds.
According to the latest weather bulletin, internal regions can expect highs between 45°C and 49°C, while coastal areas such as Dubai and Abu Dhabi will range between 40°C and 45°C. Slightly cooler temperatures of 35°C to 40°C are expected in the mountainous regions, though humidity will still be a factor.
High Humidity Makes It Feel Even Hotter
As oppressive as the daytime heat may be, it’s the humidity that’s expected to make conditions even more uncomfortable. The “feels-like” temperature could climb well above what the thermometer shows, especially during the evening and early morning hours. Fog and mist are also forecast in northern parts of the country, particularly overnight and into the early hours of Thursday.
The sharp rise in humidity is largely due to a low-pressure system from the east, clashing with high-pressure systems moving in from the west. These conflicting weather patterns have become more common during peak summer weeks and often contribute to unstable conditions.
Rough Seas and Dusty Winds Add to the Risk
Along with the soaring temperatures, residents should also be aware of moderate to rough sea conditions in the Arabian Gulf, especially in the western regions. The Oman Sea is expected to remain slight, though outdoor enthusiasts are advised to avoid venturing out during the day.
Moderate winds may pick up during the afternoon, leading to blowing dust and reduced visibility in some western parts of the UAE. These conditions can be particularly challenging for motorists, outdoor workers, and those with respiratory sensitivities.
Staying Safe During Extreme Heat: What You Can Do
Hydration and Health
- Keep yourself well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day.
- Avoid sugary or caffeinated drinks that contribute to dehydration.
- Wear breathable, light-coloured clothing and apply sunscreen when outdoors.
Smart Scheduling
- Try to schedule outdoor activities in the early morning or late evening when the sun’s rays are less intense.
- For those working outdoors, ensure compliance with the UAE’s Midday Break rule which prohibits outdoor labour between 12:30 PM and 3:00 PM during summer.
Energy Efficiency at Home
- Use blackout curtains to keep the interiors cool and reduce air conditioning use.
- Set your air conditioning at an optimal temperature (24°C is ideal) to avoid energy wastage.
- DEWA recommends sealing windows and doors to maintain cooling efficiency.
Local Lifestyle Adjustments Amid Heat
With no sign of a cooldown on the horizon, many UAE residents are adjusting their routines. Schools are reminding parents to dress children appropriately and ensure they remain hydrated. Several local businesses have shifted working hours or adopted hybrid schedules to prioritise employee safety.
Retail stores and shopping malls are also seeing a surge in foot traffic as residents seek refuge in air-conditioned environments. Outdoor venues, on the other hand, are witnessing a midday slump, with more events being scheduled for the evening.
With temperatures expected to hover around 50°C and humidity levels rising, the current UAE heat alert is a serious call to action. Whether commuting, working outdoors, or planning weekend activities, it’s crucial to remain cautious and well-prepared.
Authorities continue to advise residents to limit sun exposure, remain hydrated, and stay updated on weather forecasts from the National Centre of Meteorology. Meanwhile, local organisations are stepping up public safety efforts, from awareness drives to providing shaded areas and water stations in high-traffic zones.
