The UAE government has officially announced the Eid Al Fitr holiday dates for public sector employees. The holiday will begin on Shawwal 1 and end on Shawwal 3, 1446 AH. Work will resume on Shawwal 4, as confirmed by the Federal Authority for Government Human Resources (FAHR).
Holiday Dates Based on Moon Sighting
Eid Al Fitr marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan, which lasts either 29 or 30 days, depending on the moon sighting. The moon sighting to determine the start of Eid will take place on March 29, 2025.
- If the moon is sighted on March 29, Eid Al Fitr will be celebrated on Sunday, March 30. In this case, public sector employees will have a three-day holiday from March 30 to April 1. Including the Saturday weekend on March 29, this results in a four-day break.
- If the moon is not sighted and Ramadan extends to 30 days, Eid will fall on Monday, March 31. This would provide a three-day holiday from March 31 to April 2, leading to a five-day weekend from March 29 to April 2.
Extra Days for Sharjah Government Employees
Sharjah government employees, who follow a four-day workweek, may benefit from additional days off:
- If Eid falls on March 30, employees in Sharjah will enjoy a five-day holiday from Friday, March 28 to Tuesday, April 1.
- If Eid begins on March 31, Sharjah government employees will have a six-day holiday from Friday, March 28 to Wednesday, April 2.
Private Sector Holiday Announcement Awaited
The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) is expected to announce the official holiday dates for private sector employees soon. In past years, private sector holidays have typically aligned with the public sector schedule, depending on the moon sighting and government confirmation.
Significance of Eid Al Fitr
Eid Al Fitr is a time for spiritual reflection and celebration. It begins with the Eid prayer, followed by gatherings with family and friends. Many people exchange gifts and give to charity during this period. Public spaces, malls, and restaurants across the UAE usually host special events and promotions to mark the occasion.
Moon Sighting and Official Confirmation
The moon sighting committee will meet on the evening of March 29 to confirm the start of Eid. The official announcement will follow shortly after. Since the Islamic calendar follows the lunar cycle, the actual date of Eid can only be confirmed after the moon sighting.
