The voice behind heartbreak anthems like Tum Hi Ho and Channa Mereya, Arijit Singh, is all set to be honoured with the prestigious Padma Shri for his contributions to music. While fans are celebrating this milestone for the singer who’s given us countless chartbusters, Sonu Nigam has chimed in with a reality check and he’s not holding back!
Sonu Nigam Drops a Truth Bomb
In a candid Instagram video, the Kal Ho Naa Ho singer opened up about a glaring oversight in the Padma Awards – where are the honours for some of India’s most iconic voices? Sonu reminded us that while awards are being handed out posthumously. The legendary Kishore Kumar is still waiting for his rightful recognition. The man who gave us classics like Roop Tera Mastana and Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas hasn’t been awarded a Padma yet. Shocking, right?
Sonu didn’t stop there. He made sure to shine the spotlight on modern-day icons who’ve been dazzling us for years but remain Padma-less. “Among the current artists, Alka Yagnik has had a long and successful career, yet she hasn’t received any recognition. Shreya Ghoshal has been showcasing her talent for years and deserves to be honoured. Sunidhi Chauhan has inspired an entire generation with her distinct voice, but she remains unrecognized as well,” Sonu pointed out.
In the video, Sonu urged his fans to voice their opinions on other deserving artists across music, acting, science, and literature. Titled India and Its Pending Padma Awardees, his post sparked a conversation about why legends like Kishore Kumar haven’t received the honor yet. Singer Shraddha Pandit couldn’t help but agree, commenting, “Gospel truth spoken!”
Sonu Nigam’s Own Padma Shri Journey
Sonu himself received the Padma Shri in 2022. He admitted in the same video that he was initially reluctant to accept it. The singer even joked about telling the organizers, “Don’t you think it’s a little late in the day for this?” Classic Sonu humour.
With a career spanning decades and over 10,000 songs in multiple languages, Sonu Nigam is a living legend. From Bollywood hits to regional gems, his voice has been the soundtrack to our lives. But his recent comments shed light on the deeper issue of recognizing talent that has shaped Indian music for generations.
It’s a bittersweet moment for music lovers. While we’re thrilled for Arijit, Sonu’s call for overdue acknowledgments reminds us there’s more to be done.
