Sharjah Public Libraries Launch 24-Hour Smart Locker Book Pickup

Residents can now borrow books anytime with Sharjah Public Libraries’ new smart locker service.

Book lovers in Sharjah now have a reason to stay up late—or wake up early. Sharjah Public Libraries (SPL) has introduced a 24-hour Smart Locker service, allowing members to collect reserved books at any time of the day.

This move reflects a clear shift towards convenience, flexibility, and smarter public services in the UAE, where access to knowledge is becoming faster and more user-friendly.

A Library That Works Around Your Schedule

The new Smart Locker system is designed to remove one of the biggest barriers to using public libraries—timing.

Instead of adjusting plans around library hours, residents can now browse the online catalogue, reserve a book, and pick it up whenever it suits them. The process is simple. Once a reservation is made, the book is placed in a secure locker at the library’s back entrance. Users just scan their Emirates ID or membership card to access it.

For many residents juggling long workdays, night shifts, or busy family routines, this is a practical upgrade. It turns the library into a truly accessible, round-the-clock service.

Behind the Scenes: A Strong Digital Backbone

While the lockers may look simple on the outside, the system behind them is anything but basic. SPL relies on globally recognised cataloguing systems like the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules and the Dewey Decimal Classification.

These systems ensure that every book is easy to find, track, and deliver quickly. It’s this level of organisation that allows the locker service to run smoothly without delays or confusion.

The scale is equally impressive. SPL manages over 791,000 physical books and provides access to more than 15 million digital resources. That includes e-books, audiobooks, and research materials—making it one of the region’s most comprehensive library networks.

From Traditional Libraries to Smart Systems

Libraries have come a long way from handwritten catalogues. Back in the late 18th century, books were organised manually using paper cards. It worked, but it wasn’t efficient.

Things began to change in the early 1900s when printed catalogue cards were introduced. The real shift came in 1968 with the MARC system, which allowed computers to process and share library data.

Fast forward to today, and the transformation is clear. Printed catalogues have disappeared, replaced by digital systems that offer instant search results and seamless borrowing.

Sharjah has kept pace with this evolution. The opening of its central library in 2011 marked a major step towards automation and bilingual catalogues. By 2019, residents could access digital books remotely, further reducing the need for physical visits.

A Digital Boost During Changing Times

The demand for digital access saw a sharp rise in 2020, when more people turned to online learning and remote resources. During this time, SPL reported a 70% increase in membership, highlighting how essential accessible knowledge had become.

To keep up, the library introduced the Smart Knowledge Library in 2021. This platform offers short courses, instant certifications, and mobile-friendly learning tools. By 2025, it had evolved into a complete digital learning hub for residents of all ages.

The Smart Locker service now adds another layer to this ecosystem, bridging the gap between physical and digital access.

This initiative is more than just a convenience—it reflects how public services in the UAE are adapting to modern lifestyles.

For students, it means easier access to study materials at any hour. For working professionals, it removes the stress of rushing to the library before closing time. And for families, it creates more flexibility in planning educational activities.

It also encourages more people to return to reading, even in a digital-first world. Having quick, hassle-free access to physical books can make a big difference in building consistent reading habits.

Next for Libraries in the UAE

The future of libraries is already taking shape. Traditional systems like MARC are slowly being replaced by smarter, connected data models. These systems aim to link information across platforms, making searches faster and recommendations more personalised.

SPL is already moving in this direction. Its focus on themes like “Artificial Intelligence in Libraries: Innovation and Impact” shows a clear intent to stay ahead.

In the coming years, residents can expect smarter search tools, better content suggestions, and even more seamless access to both physical and digital resources.

Sharjah’s 24-hour Smart Locker service is a simple idea with a strong impact. It removes time barriers, improves access, and aligns perfectly with the UAE’s push towards smarter, more efficient public services.

From a single library in 1925 to a tech-driven network today, the journey reflects one clear goal—making knowledge easier to access for everyone, anytime.
