Sharjah has embarked on a significant journey towards sustainable transportation with the launch of its first phase of electric inter-city buses. This initiative aligns with the UAE’s broader efforts to achieve climate neutrality by 2050.
Introduction of Electric Buses
The Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA) has introduced ten electric buses on three major inter-city routes. These routes connect Sharjah with Dubai, Ajman, and Al Hamriyah. The selection of these routes was based on detailed studies focusing on passenger demand and density.
Features and Specifications
The newly launched electric buses are designed to meet high safety and environmental standards. Each bus is 9 meters long and can accommodate up to 41 passengers. They are equipped with air conditioning and a battery cooling system, making them suitable for the UAE’s climatic conditions. The buses have also obtained European safety certification, ensuring they meet global safety standards.
Environmental Impact
This initiative is part of Sharjah’s strategy to enhance green public transport and achieve environmental sustainability. By introducing electric buses, the emirate aims to reduce carbon emissions and promote the use of renewable energy in public transportation. The SRTA has reaffirmed its commitment to high-quality standards in its environmentally supportive strategy by implementing comprehensive plans to meet green transport targets.
Future Plan
The first phase of this project is just the beginning. The SRTA plans to increase the number of electric inter-city buses in the future, aligning with the UAE’s and Sharjah government’s initiatives to reduce the carbon footprint. The gradual shift to electric buses will create a safer and more sustainable transport environment.
Sharjah’s rollout of electric inter-city buses marks a significant milestone in the emirate’s journey towards sustainable transportation. This initiative not only supports the UAE’s climate goals but also sets a precedent for other regions to follow.
