Saudi Arabia to Submit Oscar Entry for the First Time at the 98th Academy Awards

The Saudi Film Commission opens submissions, marking the Kingdom’s debut in the International Feature Film category.

In a landmark moment for Middle Eastern cinema, Saudi Arabia has officially opened submissions for its debut entry in the International Feature Film category at the upcoming 98th Academy Awards. The announcement from the Saudi Film Commission signals a major milestone in the Kingdom’s rapidly growing film industry, giving local filmmakers a chance to showcase their work on one of the world’s most prestigious stages.

Eligibility Guidelines for Filmmakers

The selection process will be overseen by an independent committee, ensuring the chosen film meets both Saudi and Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences standards.

To qualify:

  • The film must be feature-length (over 40 minutes) and predominantly in a non-English language (at least 50%).
  • Accurate English subtitles are required for international screening.
  • The first theatrical release in Saudi Arabia must take place between 1 October 2024 and 30 September 2025, with a minimum one-week paid screening.
  • Films cannot have been broadcast or streamed publicly before their qualifying cinema release.
  • Creative control must rest primarily with Saudi citizens, residents, or those with recognised refugee or asylum status in the Kingdom.

Submission Requirements

Applicants must prepare a complete package for the committee’s review, including:

  • A digital upload of the film with a secure, password-protected link
  • Full cast and crew credits in English
  • A director’s biography and professional photograph
  • A designated key frame for display artwork
  • Proof of theatrical release and promotional advertising

The committee will review eligible submissions and select the film that best represents Saudi Arabia’s cinematic vision on the global stage.

A Cultural Milestone for Saudi Cinema

This open call marks a turning point for Saudi filmmakers, giving them an unprecedented opportunity to present their stories to a global audience. The move is in line with the Kingdom’s wider ambitions to expand its cultural footprint, nurture local talent, and build a sustainable film industry that can compete internationally.

The initiative is also expected to strengthen regional cinema ties, with industry professionals across the Gulf—particularly in the UAE—closely watching how this first entry unfolds. For audiences in Dubai and beyond, the development reflects a broader rise in Arab storytelling on the world stage.

Next thing for applicants

Submissions will be reviewed in the coming months, with the final selection announced ahead of the Academy’s official deadline for entries. The chosen film will then represent Saudi Arabia in the International Feature Film category, standing alongside productions from across the globe.

Filmmakers who wish to participate are encouraged to ensure their work meets the outlined criteria, prepare the necessary materials, and submit them within the specified window.
