Dubai’s road toll system, Salik, has introduced some significant changes that all motorists should be aware of. With new rules in place, it’s crucial to stay informed to avoid fines and keep your account in good standing.
Maximum Annual Fine Cap
Under the updated terms, the new maximum fine per vehicle for toll violations caps at Dh10,000 annually. Effective from January 1 to December 31, this cap ensures that drivers do not receive excessive fines for multiple infractions. The aim is to make the toll system fairer and more manageable for everyone.
No Refunds on Account Balance
One key update is that no refunds will be issued for any remaining balance in a Salik account. This means that if you decide to close your account or switch vehicles, you won’t be able to transfer your balance to another account. It’s a good idea to monitor your account closely and use up any remaining balance accordingly.
Expanded Toll Network
Salik is also expanding its toll network. Two new gates will be operational by November 2024 at Business Bay Crossing on Al Khail Road and Al Safa South on Sheikh Zayed Road. These additions aim to ease congestion and improve traffic flow on some of Dubai’s busiest roads.
Contesting Violations
If you receive a toll violation, you can contest it within 13 months from the date it was posted to your traffic file. This extended period allows you more time to dispute any incorrect charges, making the process more transparent and fair.
Inactive Accounts and Penalties
Salik accounts with no activity for five years will become inactive, resulting in the forfeiture of any remaining balance. This means you should keep your account active to avoid losing any unused funds. Additionally, penalties for violations include fines for insufficient funds and unregistered plates, with the latter starting at AED 100 and increasing for repeated offenses.
Important Considerations
Ensure you adequately fund your Salik account and register your vehicle’s tag to avoid fines. If you lose your tag or vehicle, report it immediately to prevent unauthorized toll charges.
The Dubai authorities streamlined the Salik system and made it fairer for all drivers with these updates. By staying informed and managing your account wisely, you can avoid unnecessary fines and enjoy a smoother driving experience in the city.
