Dubai Municipality has officially announced a Dh650 million redevelopment plan for the Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary, a bold initiative aimed at significantly elevating the site’s environmental, educational, and recreational impact.
Located just minutes from the city centre, Ras Al Khor stands as one of the UAE’s most valuable ecological reserves, home to hundreds of native and migratory species. The city plans to boost annual visitors to 250K–300K with this major upgrade.
Major upgrades to boost biodiversity and carbon capture
Wetland area to grow by 144%
The first phase of the redevelopment will see the sanctuary’s water bodies expand by 144%, taking the total wetland area to 74 hectares. This strategic expansion will not only provide more natural habitat for wildlife but also strengthen the site’s ecological balance.
New mudflats and enhanced flora
Another 10 hectares of mudflats will be added, creating essential feeding zones for migratory birds and enriching the sanctuary’s biodiversity. These salt flats support a thriving ecosystem of marine and plant life crucial to the region.
Significant carbon absorption increase
With the expansion of green spaces and native vegetation, the reserve is expected to see a 60% rise in carbon dioxide absorption, aligning with Dubai’s broader sustainability goals.
Immersive visitor experiences in nature
Bird hides and scenic walkways
Ras Al Khor’s transformation is not only about nature but also accessibility. New and improved bird hides—including the popular Flamingo Hide and Mangrove Hide—will offer better views of species like flamingos, grey herons, spoonbills, and even osprey.
Upgraded public facilities
Visitors will benefit from enhanced walking paths, seating areas, shaded viewing zones, and educational signage to foster environmental awareness. These upgrades will provide a more inclusive and engaging experience for residents, families, students, and tourists.
Phase two to deepen sustainability impact
Following the completion of the first phase by the end of next year, phase two will further enrich the sanctuary’s natural offerings. This includes planting more native vegetation, enhancing green corridors, and creating additional wildlife-attracting habitats.
With the phased rollout, the city improves infrastructure while preserving the sanctuary’s identity as a protected natural zone.
A cornerstone for Dubai’s eco-tourism future
Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary is already recognised internationally as an Important Bird Area (IBA). With this development, Dubai reinforces its reputation as a city that blends urban innovation with environmental stewardship.
The revamped sanctuary shines as a top eco-tourism spot, bringing peace to residents and sparking curiosity in nature lovers.
Dubai’s Dh650 million investment in the Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary marks a major leap in eco-conscious urban planning. With expansive wetlands, increased biodiversity, and community-centric visitor upgrades, the sanctuary will soon be a centrepiece of environmental learning and sustainable tourism in the city.
