UAE Gears Up for Scorching Summer as Longest Day Arrives This Weekend

Expect Dust Storms and Humidity

Get ready for some seriously hot weather, UAE residents! The summer solstice, the longest day of the year, is just around the corner, officially ushering in the sizzling summer season across the Northern Hemisphere. This year, the solstice falls on June 21st, bringing with it nearly 14 hours of daylight – plenty of time to soak up the sun (from a safe distance, of course).

Brace Yourselves for Soaring Temperatures

While the extended daylight hours might sound like a perk, there’s a flip side to the coin – scorching temperatures. The Emirates Astronomy Society is predicting highs that will make you sweat, ranging from 41°C to a scorching 43°C (105.8°F to 109.4°F) during the day. Evenings will offer some respite, with lows settling around 26°C to 29°C (78.8°F to 84.2°F). But be warned, temperatures in some desert regions could soar even higher, exceeding a blistering 50°C (122°F)!

“The summer solstice marks the day when the sun reaches its northernmost point in the sky,” explains Ibrahim Al Jarwan, Chairman of the Emirates Astronomy Society. “This astronomical event brings with it the hottest days of the year to the UAE, so it’s important to be prepared for the heat.”

A Tale of Two Summers: Dry Heat vs. Humid Haze

The UAE’s summer can be broadly divided into two halves, each with its own brand of unpleasantness. The first half, lasting from June 21st to August 10th, will be dominated by dry, hot weather. Brace yourselves for northerly winds that can whip up dust storms, causing visibility issues and further elevating temperatures by several degrees.

Summer: longest day of the year

The second half of summer, from August 11th to the autumnal equinox on September 23rd, will see a shift in weather patterns. While the high temperatures will persist, humidity levels will also rise significantly. This combination can make the air feel heavy and suffocating. On the plus side, these humid conditions may bring some relief in the form of afternoon thunderstorms, particularly in the mountainous regions.

Staying Safe in the Scorching Summer Heat

With the arrival of summer, it’s crucial to take precautions against the intense heat. Here are some essential tips for staying safe throughout the hot summer months in the UAE:

  • Hydration is Key: Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Opt for water over sugary drinks to avoid dehydration.
  • Seek Shade and Schedule Wisely: Avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day, typically between noon and 4 pm. If you must be outdoors, wear protective clothing, seek shade whenever possible, and apply sunscreen liberally.
  • Dress for the Weather: Opt for lightweight, loose-fitting, and breathable clothing made from natural fibers like cotton or linen. Avoid tight-fitting clothes and dark colors that absorb heat.

By following these simple tips and staying informed about the latest weather forecasts, UAE residents can navigate the hot summer months safely and comfortably. So, stock up on water, and sunscreen, and stay cool – summer’s here!
