Indian Consulate to Host International Yoga Day in Sharjah on June 21

As part of a growing global movement for wellness, the Indian Consulate in Dubai has announced a mega event to mark the 11th International Day of Yoga. Set to take place at Expo Centre Sharjah on Friday, June 21, this large-scale gathering will bring together residents across the UAE for a morning dedicated to physical and mental wellbeing.

A Unified Celebration of Wellness and Community

The announcement came during a curtain-raiser event hosted by the consulate, where community leaders, yoga instructors, and wellness advocates gathered to kickstart the celebrations.

Speaking at the event, Consul General Satish Kumar Sivan emphasised the inclusive nature of the occasion, noting that it reflects not only the cultural legacy of yoga but also the UAE’s broader commitment to harmony and health.

“Yoga, though it began in India, is a practice for the entire world. As we celebrate the ‘Year of Community’ in the UAE, we’re proud to host this event in Sharjah — uniting residents of all backgrounds in pursuit of holistic health,” he said.

Mandatory Registration Now Open

Those wishing to take part in the yoga session must register in advance via a newly launched portal.

Registration requires either an Emirates ID or passport details, and is essential to secure entry due to anticipated high turnout. Organisers are encouraging participants to register early, especially families, yoga studios, and wellness groups across the Emirates.

What Participants Can Expect on the Day

The International Yoga Day in Sharjah is designed to be more than just a yoga class — it is a celebration of wellness, inclusion, and cultural exchange.

Attendees can look forward to:

  • A mass yoga demonstration led by expert instructors
  • Special sessions including chair yoga and breathwork
  • Cultural performances inspired by Indian and Emirati traditions
  • Wellness booths, interactive zones, and healthy lifestyle resources
  • Participation from schools, corporates, and social organisations

Participants are advised to bring their own yoga mats, water bottles, and wear suitable attire.

Supporting the UAE’s Year of Community

This year’s yoga celebration also aligns with the UAE’s nationwide initiative—the Year of Community—which encourages unity through shared cultural and wellness experiences.

By hosting in Sharjah, the Indian Consulate makes yoga more accessible to all.

In previous years, similar events in Dubai and Abu Dhabi have drawn thousands. With the expanded venue and broader outreach this year, the Sharjah edition is expected to be the largest yet.

The United Nations declared International Day of Yoga in 2014, and people observe it every year on 21 June to highlight its mental, physical, and spiritual benefits.

In the UAE, the event has consistently seen strong participation across all nationalities, reinforcing the country’s standing as a wellness-driven and inclusive society.

This year’s celebration not only promotes physical health but also champions values like mindfulness, resilience, and togetherness — ideals that deeply resonate with the diverse population of the UAE.

How to Join the Celebration

To be a part of this wellness-driven event, participants must:

  • Complete the mandatory online registration in advance
  • Arrive at the venue on time (early morning slots recommended)
  • Carry valid ID, yoga mat, and water bottle
  • Dress comfortably and be ready to participate in group activities

Organizers will share event details, including the schedule and arrival instructions, with registered participants closer to the date.
