Emraan Hashmi, the OG kisser who ruled the screen with his smouldering eyes, magnetic screen presence, and yes those oh-so-talked-about kissing scenes is done playing it safe. The man who once gave romance a bold new face has finally hit the refresh button, and he’s here to remind you: he’s more than just the guy with the lip-lock legacy.
Emraan Hashmi on the ‘Serial Kisser’ tag
In a recent heart-to-heart with Ranveer Allahbadia, Emraan peeled back the curtain on the infamous Serial Kisser tag that followed him like a shadow. Imagine walking into a room, and before your name is even dropped, people are already whispering your nickname from a film 15 years ago.
He shared, “There was a time when I got a little bit annoyed when I wanted people to take me slightly seriously. See, a large part of my career 2003 to 2012, is chhavi ko is tarah nichoda gaya tha ki wo ek label ban gaya tha, wo marketing main istemaal kiya jata tha. Har film main bina wajah cheezein daali jati thi. Aur media mein bhi jab aata tha ek tag line, toh mere naam se pehle wo tag aata tha – Serial Kisser (This image was utilised in such a manner that it became a label. It was also used as markeing tool. Things were added to films without rhyme or reason. And in media, my name would come with the tag)”.
Between 2003 and 2012, Emraan was Bollywood’s go-to man for the smooch with emotion. But what started as a bold brand quickly turned into a box. He added, “And this is my gift to myself. So, I am not blaming anyone else. But what happens – just when you cross that phase where those films go on and everything happens. Then you want to go to your next phase. You want to be taken seriously as an actor. You try to do those films where your range is visible to people. But after seeing that, they again come back to the same tag (serial kisser) and say, there was no such scene in this.”
From Kiss King to Character King
Emraan didn’t just stay stuck in his ‘serial’ phase. The man has proven his acting chops time and again, from Shanghai to The Dirty Picture, showing us he’s got layers deeper than your Instagram filters. But still, every time he tried to reinvent himself, someone somewhere would go, “Wait, where was the kiss?”.
Was Emraan bitter? Nope. Just a little ticked off, and understandably so. He concluded saying, “I am presenting something new. I am an actor. It is my job to play different characters. Why do you want to see the same again? Because of this, I used to get a little annoyed. But otherwise, I am chill about it. I do not have many issues with it.”
What’s next for emraan?
Emraan is diving headfirst into intense territory with his next release Ground Zero, a war drama that’s set to show us a grittier, bolder version of the actor. Forget the kisses – this time, he’s bringing the chaos, courage, and possibly, tears.
