The daily drive between Dubai and the northern emirates is about to get significantly shorter. Emirates Road (E611) will undergo a major upgrade starting September 2025, cutting travel time by up to 45%.
Emirates Road will be widened from three to five lanes in both directions between Al Badee Interchange and Umm Al Quwain—covering 25 km under a Dh750 million upgrade.
What the expansion involves

The project will address one of the most frequently used and heavily congested road segments in the UAE. Key components of the expansion include:
- Increasing the number of lanes from three to five in both directions
- Building six new directional bridges at Interchange No. 7, adding up to 12.6 kilometres in total
- Introducing 3.4 kilometres of collector roads on both sides of the highway
- Boosting traffic capacity from 5,400 to 9,000 vehicles per hour in each direction
Once completed, the upgrades will support smoother travel across Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, UAQ, and Ras Al Khaimah—relieving pressure on roads crowded with daily commuters and transport vehicles.
Responding to growing road demands
Emirates Road (E611) is vital for daily travel and trade as the northern emirates grow, making its upgrade essential.
According to senior officials from the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, the expansion will help balance traffic loads across the federal road network and ensure more predictable, efficient travel.
This stretch of E611 has become an essential link between Dubai and the rest of the country, acting as an alternative to Sheikh Zayed Road (E11) and Mohammed Bin Zayed Road (E311), which already experience heavy traffic volumes.
Enhanced capacity at key interchange
A major part of the project focuses on Interchange No. 7, which will be redesigned to improve flow and handle more vehicles at a time. The planned bridges at this junction will allow the interchange to accommodate up to 13,200 vehicles per hour, helping to ease merging bottlenecks and reduce delays during peak periods.
These changes are expected to particularly benefit drivers heading towards industrial zones and ports in the northern emirates, where cargo movement is time-sensitive.
Long-term impact on inter-emirate travel
The road expansion is not only about adding more lanes—it’s also about ensuring that transport across the UAE keeps up with the needs of a growing population and a rapidly expanding economy.
Cutting commute time by nearly half will let thousands save time daily and strengthen the road network to handle future traffic growth.
Improvements in travel time will also support a more balanced spread of economic activity, making it easier for businesses and residents in Sharjah, Ajman, and RAK to connect with Dubai and beyond.
A step for the UAE infrastructure
Emirates Road, which stretches 94 kilometres from Dubai through to Ras Al Khaimah, was originally developed to divert long-distance and cargo traffic away from central roads. Over time, it has evolved into a vital commuter route as well.
The expansion highlights the UAE’s commitment to building a smart, safe, and future-ready road network.
Crews will launch construction in Q3 2025 and aim to finish within two years. Although temporary diversions may occur, the upgrade promises long-term gains in convenience and travel efficiency.
