Dubai is well on its way to becoming an eco-friendly city and the RTA has now announced yet another strategy that will fuel this initiative. Dubai RTA rolled out its ‘Zero-Emissions Public Transportation in Dubai 2050’ strategy. This makes it the first Middle Eastern agency to develop a long-term strategy for migrating towards Net-Zero Emission Public Transport by 2050.
In addition to the public transportation project, the RTA stated that it also wants to reduce the carbon footprint of its buildings and waste-management facilities.
The RTA has ambitious goals for the upcoming year, including the decarbonization of all cabs, limos, and public transportation, near-zero energy buildings, the use of renewable energy, and the abolition of municipal waste. It claimed that the plan would save AED3.3 billion and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 10 million tonnes.

Speaking about the new strategy, Mattar Al Tayer, RTA director general said: “The new strategy outlines a comprehensive approach to sustainability within RTA. Its primary objective is to enhance sustainability and reduce carbon dioxide emissions. At the same time, it contributes to realising RTA’s mission of achieving global leadership in smooth and sustainable mobility through innovative roads and transport services that elevate the customer experience to world-class standards.”
In line with Dubai Economic Agenda D33, RTA’s new strategy aims to achieve multiple objectives. These include decarbonizing taxis, limousines, and public buses, designing energy-efficient buildings, using renewable energy sources, and achieving zero waste to landfills. This also means that the RTA Will convert 10 per cent of public buses into electric and hydrogen vehicles by 2030, expanded to 20 per cent in 2035 and increase to the entire fleet by 2050.
In addition, 10 per cent of the emirate’s school buses will be converted into electric and hydrogen buses by 2030, which will be raised to 30 per cent in 2035 to eventually reach 100 per cent by 2050.
