what are the new changes?

Dubai Municipality has started the renovation of the Clocktower. The makeover aims to improve its aesthetic appeal and for this purpose, authorities are planning on integrating greenery, multicolored lighting, as well as upgrading the design of the water fountain.

Dawoud Al Hajri, director-general of Dubai Municipality, said: “By maintaining Dubai’s historical and architectural landmarks, and safeguarding them for future generations, this project helps the Municipality to achieve its objectives of implementing high-level sustainable urban planning that will improve the city’s appeal.”

Engineer Jabir Al Ali, director of General Maintenance Department at Dubai Municipality, said the three-month-long project will include decorative gardening, replacing old floors with hard floors, implementing multicoloured lighting, and revamping the fountain. However, authorities assured that despite the new changes, the landmark’s historical or architectural significance will remain intact.

Take a look at how it will look when completed:

The Deira Clocktower was built in 1963 and remains an iconic landmark to date. The tower provides access to the bridge, as well as being a distinguishable clock in the city. It was renovated in 1972 but remains the same, revamped with sturdier materials.

The renovation is part of the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, which lays out a thorough plan for sustainable urban development in the emirate with a focus on improving people’s quality of life and happiness.

Phase II of the master plan states that areas like Dubai Silicon Oasis, Deira, and Bur Dubai will be modernized to make Dubai the best city in the world to live in. This modernization will extend across Sheikh Zayed Road to Dubai Marina, Jumeirah Lakes Towers, and Expo City.
